Hello professor and classmates, In this unit, we studied Erikson's idea of intimacy versus isolation, and it is super interesting! Erikson believed that people need close connections and partnerships in their lives, which makes sense because it helps us understand ourselves and build meaningful relationships. But here is the twist - even though we crave intimacy, it seems like fewer young adults these days are getting married or becoming parents compared to earlier generations. So, why is this happening? First, let us think about why young adults have these strong intimacy needs. It is like we are on a journey to figure ourselves out, and connecting with others is a big part of that. As we grow up, we start wanting more independence, like finding a job or exploring life, and that self-reflection helps us understand who we are. Emotionally, we start feeling deeper emotions and attachments to people, and we are learning how to deal with all these new feelings. Socially, we have this five- factor model thing going on that helps us see what we are open to and what we are not, and it does not change much unless we really feel the need to change. So, yes, that is why we crave intimacy. But here is the tricky part. Even though we want that closeness, we see fewer young adults getting married or having kids. It seems like one reason is that we want to keep our options open and explore our desires before committing to just one person.
