Mike’s Case Case Conceptualization Theory/Theorist: Family Systems Therapy Presenting Problem:  Mike, a 14-year-old Asian American Male, lives in Virginia with his father, mother, and two sisters, ages 18 and 20. His math teacher referred him due to his being withdrawn and declining grades. Mike is doing average in school with a 3.00 GPA, but his father is not pleased with his performance. This is causing Mike to feel pressure about his school and experience verbal abuse from his father. Mike feels conflicted because although he wants to make his father happy, he also does not have the same dreams as his sisters and wants to open an automotive shop with his friend. This is causing Mike to begin to show signs of anxiety as well as feel inadequate.  Hypothesis:  Mike's anxiety and feelings of inadequacy stem from his father's frequent verbal abuse. This has caused him to spend most of his time in his room to avoid the tense atmosphere of his father. Mike blames himself for this tension that is in his household. According to Dykeman (2022), family tensions can arise due to developmental changes. Mike is getting older and starting to have a vision of his future, but this is also causing him to feel that because he is not going in the path expected of him, he is causing stress within his family.  Goal:  According to Dykeman (2022), the goal of family systems theory is to change the systems within the individual they are in. Mike and his family's goal is to gain better communication skills between him and his father, significantly to help relieve the tensions within the household. This will help decrease the verbal abuse Mike has experienced with his father, help Mike become more open with his future goals, and better his self-esteem.  Interventions: Family Interview:  In this method, it is important to get a direct look into the relationships and interactions that occur within the family, discussing the change that everyone wants from counseling to help with influential change (Dykeman, 2022). For Mike, it is clear that the tensions between him and his father have impacted him and his household significantly. Including Mike's father and mother in the counseling sessions will help him clear his feelings and thoughts and allow him to see his family's dynamics.  Communication Game:  This intervention demonstrates the effects of incongruence between Mike and his father and other family members in the household, typically done between two individuals at a time to help improve their communication (Dykeman, 2022). This will help Mike and his family communicate more effectively using interactions when actions and communication are not done congruently.  Expected Outcome : Mike will decrease anxiety and feel better about himself. His family will be able to communicate more effectively, which will cause him to become more open about his future without the fear of disappointing his family. This will help alleviate the pressures that he had from his father and benefit not only the relationship between him and his father but also alleviate the tension within their household.
