Let’s see what that process looks like a little closer. Education Requierments The first step to becoming a clinical psychologist is earning a bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field. This undergraduate education provides foundational knowledge in psychology, including coursework in areas such as abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and research methods. Clinical psychologists typically pursue a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. There are two primary types of doctoral programs in clinical psychology: Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) and Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology). Ph.D. programs typically emphasize research and academic training, while Psy.D. programs focus more on clinical practice and professional skills. Doctoral programs in clinical psychology include supervised clinical training experiences, such as practicum placements, internships, and supervised therapy sessions. These clinical training experiences provide students with hands-on experience working with clients under the guidance of licensed psychologists. After completing a doctoral program in clinical psychology, individuals must obtain licensure to practice independently as a clinical psychologist.
