Hello Dr. Pressey and class,
What impact does social media have on political participation? Over the years, social media has become a major outlet surrounding politics. Alodat et al. (2023) reveals, studies indicate that social media typically increases political participation, especially for
the younger population. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are frequently used to communicate about politics. Alodate et al. (2023) further explains, social media allows a space for individuals to express political opinions, connect with others with similar political interest, and as a means of education. As a result, it has a major impact on political participation.
What are the pros and cons of social media as it pertains to politics? With most things, there are pros and cons of social media regarding politics. Perhaps the biggest pro is that social media has the capability of reaching a high volume of people; therefore, making
it easier to spread information to influence others. However, this may also be a con because in some circumstances. Due to how quickly information circulates via social media, this can be dangerous when it comes to misinformation. For example, in 2016 a significant disinformation campaign was launched American social media to influence the election in favor of Donald Trump (Simon et al., 2019). Therefore, the benefits of social media as it pertains to politics can only be reaped if used appropriately. What is the role of social media in your own political education and participation?
Social media does play a role in my own political education and participation. As someone who frequents social media platforms, I can see how much material involving politics is distributed. Carefully, shared articles and social media post can be used as a way to educate oneself about political situations. Lastly, concerning participation, social media has allowed me to easily express myself, and share information in regard to politics. References
