6-1 Discussion: The Responsibility to be Historically Informed Discuss what responsibilities, if any, citizens should have related to being historically informed. For example, what historical inquiry skills might be important for a citizenry to have to address current global challenges? To paraphrase the old saying, those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. (Clairmont, 2022) As citizens of the United States it is paramount that we study and understand our history. An educated electorate is necessary to ensure the success of our democratic republic. Those who blindly "pull the lever" based on political party are apt to vote against their own self interests and those of their descendants. Skills needed to be educated would be critically analyzing primary and secondary sources. Ensuring they are reliable and not propaganda being shared on social media. Also analyzing for bias or missing narratives and doing further research to discover if there are references with those silent voices represented. Clairmont, N. (2022). “Those Who Do Not Learn History Are Doomed To Repeat It.” Really? Big Think . https://bigthink.com/culture-religion/those-who-do-not- learn-history-doomed-to-repeat-it-really/ Think about a challenge, opportunity, event, or issue that affects your community. How might being more historically informed impact how you understand that issue or how you take action? We are currently seeing a rise of authoritarianism and white supremacist ideals here at home and globally, much like we did in the early 1900s in Europe and Asia. (Freedom House, n.d.) The fact that we are more globalized in our trade and commerce, as well as in social media, is only amplifying this further. It is paramount that we as an electorate not simply assume that it can't happen here, and that it isn't important to
vote and have a voice in the governance of our country. This isn't the first time that we had a rise of Nazi and White Supremacist ideals on our shores, and won't be the last unless we take action to eradicate it. ( Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra | an MSNBC Original Podcast , 2022) The only way to turn this away is to be an active and educated electorate. (Nadeem, 2023) Being more historically informed will allow the citizens to recognize the signs and challenges to our liberties, here and abroad. Hopefully this will drive them to action and to critically examine their sources as we lead up to another election cycle. Freedom House. (n.d.). The global expansion of authoritarian rule.
