13. Was the massive use of American force against al Qaeda , the Taliban, and/or Iraq for the best, or misplaced ultimately, if the goal was to prevent future terrorism? September 11, 2001, was a huge turning point within the United States. We always knew that Al Qaeda was a major threat but not in that way. After the events that took place on 9/11 the United States waged a necessary war of self-defense (Austin). Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban violently opposed the U.S. and planned several attacks on the U.S. Many American citizens wanted justice after the 2001 attacks. President Bush called for a “War on Terror”. One of his most famous lines was, “I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” On September 18, 2001 President Bush signed a law that authorized the President to: use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 (Denskal). This was called the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). The creation of this particular law and the use of its forces was called for, necessary, and completely justified. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, as I have stated before, devised many plans to violently attack the United States. In February of 1998, Bin Laden called for Muslims to kill Americans, including civilians, anywhere in the world that they can be found (PBS). We, as Americans, wanted this justice to be served. The force was necessary to not only receive justice for the attacks, but to stop these attacks in the future. By using such force we accomplished much more than people realize. Yes, we dismantled and disrupted these terrorists groups, but we also showed the world that we will seek justice and take actions to do so.
