POLS 1501 – Information Literacy 1 INFORMATION LITERACY – POLS 1501 Using Information Ethically and Legally Once you have all your resources, remember to use information ethically and legally. When you use someone else's work, it is important to give them proper credit to avoid legal and ethical issues that may arise. There are two things to consider – Copyright and plagiarism Copyright infringement is a legal matter. Ex . A student makes an electronic copy of the entire copyrighted textbook and distributes copies to her class. Plagiarism is presenting author's original work or ideas as your own - even if you have the original author's approval or consent. Ex . A student copies some text from a book and uses the sentences in her paper without acknowledging her source. She passes off the work as her own. Providing correct citations acknowledges the author's contribution and strengthens your argument by adding credibility to your work. By using proper citation methods, you are also showing your reader that your work is well researched and well informed. Proper citations will also help you avoid plagiarism and support your ideas using evidence. It also gives other learners information on the resources you used and aids them quickly access the source. When citing other authors' work, you have two options: direct quotes or paraphrasing. If you choose to use direct quotes, make sure to put the author's words in quotation marks and provide their last name and publication date with page number or paragraph number. If you decide to paraphrase the author's work, you must still provide a citation. In paraphrases, you rewrite the author’s words into your own and then cite with the author’s last name and publication date. It is essential to acknowledge the source of the ideas you use, regardless of the method you choose. As you know, UoPeople uses APA citation style. Refer to the UoPeople APA Tutorials in the LRC for help with APA citations. In summary , proper citations show respect to the authors you cite, provide evidence to support your ideas, and help others find the same resources you used.
