Part I: Explain why we should focus so much on immigration at the southern border with
Mexico instead of the northern border with Canada.
Due to the quantity and variety of illicit drugs being smuggled across the border, I believe
border security should be prioritized at the southern border rather than the northern frontier.
Methamphetamine, fentanyl, and heroin are the sorts of drugs that fall under this category.
The Mexican drug gangs use individuals known as mules to transport narcotics across the
border, with little regard for what could happen to the mullet or anybody else who receives the
contraband. Many of the individuals whom the cartel employs are essentially those who are
jobless, food insecure, or have been ejected from their homes by the cartel. Sometimes they
take the mules' families captive and use them to coerce someone into adopting a life of
trafficking (Smith, 2012). In July 2021, the CBP reported having 212,000 interactions at the
Southern border, according to this week's reading. Just consider how many of them were
involved in drug trafficking, or even better, consider how many mules they were unaware of.
This means that the focus should be on the southern border since the volume of immigrants
crossing the border and the contraband, they bring in dwarfs the quantity of people and
narcotics that the northern frontier encounters.
Part II: Putting politics aside, how should the United States best address immigration now?
(Note: there should be no direct discussion of political parties.)
I believe that the practice of "seeking asylum" must end. Asylum seekers have largely been
granted admission into the United States without much screening during the past couple of
years. The collapse of their home nations, including Honduras, Venezuela, and Guatemala, as
well as a weakening economy, fuel the urge to emigrate; nonetheless, the justification of
seeking asylum should only be used for refugees or nations that are embroiled in conflict.
Immigration regulations must be followed, and immigrants must be held responsible. People
who want to enter the nation legitimately in order to become citizens should have their visas
overstayed and should be deported. There are good and bad ways to become a citizen, and
regulations must be strict.
Part III: What about in the next five years? (Again, no direct discussion of political parties.)
I predict that immigration from Central and South America will significantly increase during
the next five years. The CBP reports that over a million interactions had been recorded in
FY2022, which is a significant increase from July 2021 when they reported just 212,000
contacts. This large-scale migration is undesirable because it will put pressure on our
economy, which is already in decline. If the lives of immigrants are wholly or partially
supported by the federal government, then taxpayers are paying for the immigrants' needs.
The wisest course of action when we have issues that need to be handled in our own
"backyard" is probably not to accept additional migrants since we already have an issue as a
country with homelessness and a food crisis.
