1. What is the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation? a. The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education (APRN Consensus Model) is a uniform model of regulation for the future of advanced practice nursing that is designed to align the interrelationships among licensure, accreditation, certification, and education (LACE). 2. What are the 4 key components of the APRN Consensus Model? a. LACE i. Licensure ii. Accreditation iii. Certification iv. Education 3. The targeted completion date for adoption of the Consensus Model was 2015. Did we meet the targeted completion date? If not, how close are we to getting a Consensus Model for APRN Regulation in the United States? a. The Consensus Model provides guidance for states to adopt uniformity in the regulation of APRN roles. The target date to complete that work is 2015. i. Today, many states have adopted portions of the Model elements but there still may be variation from state to state. APRNs moving from state to state need to ask themselves, ii. As long as regulatory requirements differ from state to state, each state border represents an obstacle to portability—potentially preventing access to professionals and access to care. The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation has the potential to harness this power by outlining regulatory requirements in licensure, accreditation, certification and education that should be adopted by every state. 4. What is your overall opinion of the Consensus Model? a. I think that the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation is especially important because there does need to be a uniform model of regulation for all states for practicing APRNs. The 4 components are great because they all really tie together, you cannot have one without the other. I like that in 2015 they set out to adopt a uniform regulation for APRN and from what I have read, today, many of the states have adopted the elements of the Consensus model. There still is variation from state to state, but it seems to me like they are moving in the right direction.
