Chapter 1 After Earth Day; US Environmentalism Going into the Nixon area, you could say the United States lacked a guideline when it came to the nation’s environmental system. I guess you could say that we all thought that our natural resources would never die and just be there for all our future generations. Thank God for Richard Nixon’s short, but sweet tenure that started our nation’s insight into treating the earth with respect. 1. From Nixon to Trump Administration, it has been a back-and-forth battle between a proper medium into protecting our natural resources and keeping the nation functionable under these new guidelines. Although very short, as stated above, Nixon’s presidency turned the nation’s attention on regulating what we were taking from Mother Earth and how it would be replenished. Arguments could be heard on both sides on the “evolutionary process” on how it has evolved, but I would just call it politics. Take for instance no Clean Water Act or no Clean Water Act, and we’ll be ok. Not so true, these resources are very valuable and much needed. So, thank goodness we had some good presidents who had this on their agenda. But with each administration came new challenges to the previous administration “wins” as we can call it. Ford, Carter, Clinton, and Obama seemed to all care about the nation and its handiwork, but there something about Reagan and Trump that seemed all about business. 2. Though some would see these new guidelines and regulations as all good items, they were somewhat straining on the companies that still had a job to do. Each new president would try to tear the previous president’s gains down with his new platform. When it should have been all about the nation’s good. Although employment could be used as a great argument, we also need clean water to drink and clean air to breathe. So, with each new change, another change must occur to keep our nation’s resources flourishing again and again; kind of a trial-and-error thing. 3. With each new administration came and still comes new challenges. But these challenges also come along with state and local governments. So, getting together on the national and state level was a pretty good idea. Even with a new president sitting in the White House, you would sometimes have some of the same powers sitting in the Senate or The House of Representatives. Let’s look at the Keystone Pipeline, it had its benefits, but when it came to some of our nation’s oldest cultures and its people, such as the Native
Americans, no thought was ever given, so the battle between Trump and our current administration began and each side tried stopping with a stroke of a pen. But implementation from both sides on the American Clean Energy and Security Act probably would’ve stopped all this.
