PAD 630 – Foundations of Public Administration Short Paper – Week 1 Introduction The relationships and leadership within the administration of the president and other political figures is forever changing and will continue to be tenuous determining who is in the white house or not. The people of America have the desire and right to be aware of how the country is run day-to-day and should be informed on current and future conflicts between parties and other countries. All those who are in power are elected and work for the people who make up the United States, therefore transparency should not be kept from the American people. The first Amendment of the Constitution states, “Prevents the government from making laws that regulate an establishment of religion, or that prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances.” (Wikipedia Contributors, 2023) Freedom of Speech and Press, allows me to seek answers for the American people about public perception and why it is obstructing the agenda of the president to ensure the best for the people. All questions will be directly stated to U.S Representative Donald Manzullo, who is currently a sitting member of the United States Committee for Ways and Means. Question #1 Mr. Congressmen, prior to the election of the president, NAFTA was declared a concern for Americans. Although NAFTA has been renegotiated numerous times throughout the years, the people are still waiting for ratification. Why is this?
In 1992, there were three countries that came together to sign the agreement, NAFTA. The United States, Canada and Mexico all came together with an objective to stimulate trade and increase trading opportunities, which could potentially lead to an increase in job opportunities. The goal was to produce economic growth between all involved parties but with all agreements there is always negatives and downfalls that will impact all parties. It was later determined that the trade between Mexico and others transformed from an excess in funding to dramatic decrease of 54 million dollars over a 20-year period. This dramatic decrease led to almost a half million jobs lost in the United States during this period since the NAFTA deal was originally signed. (NAFTA, 2018) Question #2 Mr. Congressmen, during the president’s campaign he made promises regarding several topics of discussion. Illegal immigration continues to grow in this country and attempting to combat this with a wall is not being supported. Why is this? For years the United States has always been welcoming to those from various cultures and parts of the country wanting to migrate to the land of America. In 1985, a poll was completed throughout the country and Americans revealed they were not opposed to people coming to America if it was done legally. Americans stated people who are migrating to the United States legally are more likely to become functioning members of society, which will lead to contribution to the economy and growth as a country. Whereas it is determined that approximately 11 million people have illegally made their way to the United States and of those individuals 14% are somehow linked to a crime or criminal offense. For your concerns about the wall at the border, the current president does not have the entire support of the Republican party
to vote in the change. But 14 years prior the Democratic party was in favor of the barrier wall south of the border. Question #3 Mr. Congressmen, the president is mentioning to lower the amount of taxes the American people will have to pay. Can you elaborate on behalf of yourself and your colleagues how paying less will be a bad thing? While the goal of the president is to create more jobs and economic growth, while simultaneously simplifying the tax code for the middle-class population. By trying to complete this would allow those to keep more money in their pockets and not be scraping the bottom just to make a payment or provide food for their family. But on the other hand, the other side argues that if this was completed successfully eventually the Federal government would see a decrease in financial stability for the country and would not be able to effectively run the country. A study was conducted showing a decrease in the tax rate and capital cost would lead to long term increases for the GDP. Which would also lead to more than 900,000 plus careers for the American people. Mr. Congressman, how can the members of the government not see the benefit this would have for the American people? Is the government against economic growth?
