SOC-FPX2000: Cultural Diversity Assessment 5: Comparing Politics, Law, Policy, and Power on Same-Sex Marriages Introduction The paper compares and contrasts the political climate, law, policy, and authority of two states with opposing views on same-sex marriage: Massachusetts and Colorado. Part 1 Laws Colorado's ban on same-sex marriage has been deemed illegal by the State's courts. Massachusetts was the first State to legalize homosexual marriage when it did so in 2003. Theories of Power The state autonomy theory Pluralism Theory Explanations for the Differences in how each State’s Government Has Approached the Issue of Same-Sex Marriages History Religion Demographics Ideology Part 2 The freedom of Americans to travel across states has been considerably influenced by the norms and legislation surrounding homosexual marriage in the United States. From 2016 to 2019, immigration to Massachusetts has been relatively high. The overall number of people living in
the State increased as a consequence. In 2019, Massachusetts had a 20% increase in population. This is according to a recent study (Michaelson & Sudborough, 2019). Part 3 Goodridge v. Department of Public Health was a landmark case in Massachusetts. On May 14, 2003, a judge ruled that the State's ban on homosexual marriage was unconstitutional. In essence, Massachusetts had passed anti-discrimination law. As a consequence of this law, gay couples would be mistreated. Marrying inside one's sex group was highly stigmatized before Goodridge. Unfortunately, many people have lost their jobs because of their sexual orientation.
