Demoquiz 2 Light and Moon Pendulums (150) 36 points available 1. (15pts) Explore The patterns in nature which have formed science over the ages are profound and interesting mathematically. Please investigate some such patterns you find in the world around you and report here your findings. Directions : Go on a scavenger hunt for Fibonacci spirals or other interesting patterns in your world. Take a picture of the item you find, and include your thumb in the picture so we know you really took the picture (not googled it). Write a sentence explaining how your pattern is relevant in science. a. Item 1; After doing some research about the Fibonacci patterns of a pinecone, the pattern allows researchers understand factors such as genetic and hormonal mechanisms that regulate these patterns. b. Item 2; The petals of a flower give telling signs of a flowers reproductive system, this is because a good system of arrangement for petals can make pollination and seed production more effective.
c. Item 3; Leaves Fibonacci patterns show scientists how the patterns facilitate an optimal exposure to sunlight (of course for photosynthesis). 2. (10pts) Prove the acceleration due to gravity on the Earth by repeating the experiment that you saw in lecture ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=NxZMjpMhwNE&e mbeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F&embeds_origin=https %3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com&feature=emb_logo ) but on Earth. STEPS: a. Make a pendulum with your shoes or something. It should have a string and a “bob”. The “bob” should be heavy enough that the string has a constant tension(does not bend or twist).. b. measure the length L (in meters) of your string from the middle of the “bob” to the point you use to attach the string to something steady . 14” ~ 1.12 feet c. Measure at least 10 periods per trial, in which one full period equates to the object returning to the starting position . Do 10 trials. Fill in the following table. Trial Time for 10 complete swings Ave. time per swing 1 13 seconds 1.3 seconds/swing 2 13.5 seconds 1.35 seconds/swing 3 15 seconds 1.5 seconds/swing 4 13.5 seconds 1.35 seconds/swing 5 14.5 seconds 1.45 seconds/swing 6 14.7 seconds 1.47 seconds/swing 7 16 seconds 1.6 seconds/swing 8 14.5 seconds 1.45 seconds/swing
Trial Time for 10 complete swings Ave. time per swing 9 14.3 seconds 1.43 seconds/swing 10 14.5 seconds 1.45 seconds/swing a. (4pts) Take the average of all the ten averages above: ___1.435 average seconds/swing___________ b. (4pts) Use the equation 𝑔 = 𝐿( 2 𝜋) 2 /𝑇 2 to find how well you measured the acceleration due to gravity on the Earth ( 𝑔 = 9 . 81 𝑚/𝑠 2 ) . Please use your actual value for the period in the calculation, honesty is more important than getting exactly 9.81. . Your value of 𝑔 = 21.47 c. (2pts) Is your value clearly different from the Moon of 1.625 𝑚/𝑠 2 ? If not, please clearly explain your most likely source of error Yes, it is much different. The error could be mainly due to the fact that I was alone when conducting this experiment and making accurate time measurements (due to me doing everything) was difficult. Also, measuring the middle of the bob (in this case my shoe) can be a little difficult because the exact middle of the shoe is hard to pinpoint. A mixture of these two could have resulted in this much higher value. 3. (11pts) Reason Moon Landing True or False? Discuss your opinion and support your reasoning with facts. The moon landing was factual. As discussed in my discussion post, “proof” that the moon landing was fabricated is merely conspiracy. Some conspiracy points made, such as the waving flags have been debunked. This conspiracy in particular was debunked due to the fact that the flag was straightened out due to NASA putting a rod through the top part of the flag, and the waving effect is due to the wrinkles in the flag as it was folded up on its way to the moon. Obviously the pendulum is likely the strongest tangible evidence that the moon landing was real. One of my more favorite, yet lesser known conspiracies was

that the astronauts would not be able to make it through the radiation field known as the ‘Van Allen’ radiation b elt. However, the action of making it through this field was fascinatingly described as “fire walking”. As if you were to walk on fire, you would try to get through it as fast as possible. The same concept applies to this radiation field, and it is exactly what the astronauts had to do.
