Exp 5: Magnetic Force Post Lab Questions PHYS 223 1. Describe how your observations would change if the direction of the current were in the opposite direction. a If the direction of the current were in the opposite direction that would mean that there would be an equal force in the opposite direction. 2. Describe how your observations would change if the permanent magnetic assembly were rotated 180° that is, if the direction of the magnetic field were in the opposite direction. a The magnetic field would still be the same and everything will remain how it is. 3. Show that it is only the horizontal portion of the circuit board wire that contributes to the vertical magnetic force. In other words, show that the vertical portion of the wire does not vary the weight of the magnet assembly. a As a result of the Right Hand Rule, the magnetic force in this portion is pointing to the left. The current on the left vertical portion is pointed downwards, with the magnetic field still pointing into the page. As a results of the Right Hand Rule, the magnetic force in this portion is pointing to the right. With one magnetic force pointing to the right and the other to the left, they are cancelled out and do not affect the vertical magnetic force. 4. What was the magnetic field strength of the permanent magnet assembly with all six horseshoe magnets installed? Is this a reasonable value? From your results in objective 3, what can be inferred about the relative strengths of each horseshoe magnet? a The magnetic field strength of the permanent magnet assembly with all six horseshoe was 0.6T. This is a reasonable value because each individual magnet was 0.1T. We can make an inference about the relative strength of each horseshoe magnet depends on the current being passed through it. 5. From your observations of the triple-beam balance readings and the current readings, show that the red end of the horseshoe magnet is the "north" end. a This can be done by the right-hand rule. If we point out finger on our right hand upwards in the direction of the magnetic for and curl our fingers in the direction from positive to negative then are finger points towards the right. This means that the field is going into the “page” which indicates that the red end of the magnet is the north end. 6. Estimate the maximum possible magnetic force contributed by the earth's magnetic field, 𝐵𝐵 𝐸𝐸 , to these experiments. Assume exists in the plane parallel to the earth's surface. What can be done with the experimental apparatus to eliminate this contribution?
a We must perform the experiment without any other external magnetic force and account for the minimal force that the earth’s magnetic force interference because earth’s magnetic field has a strength of 1*10^-6 tesla.
