Hubble’s Law Below is a table of galaxies, their distances, and their velocities. Galaxy Distance (Mpc) H-Alpha (angstroms) Velocity (Mm/s) Age (billion yrs) NGC 1357 24.72 6608 2.19 11.29 NGC 1832 30.99 6616 2.02 15.34 NGC 2775 17.89 6603.16 1.46 12.25 NGC 2903 6.96 6584.2 0.45 15.47 NGC 3368 11.89 6630.71 0.88 13.51 NGC 3516 40.00 6625.5 2.53 15.81 NGC 3627 9.57 6582.72 0.72 13.29 The table is not yet complete. You will collect the missing data and graph Hubble’s law to measure the age of the universe. 1. Visit the Hubble’s Law lab page and use the clickable spectra to measure the observed location of the H-alpha emission line for each of the galaxies included in the table above. Enter your measured values in the table. (For help with filling out the table above, watch this teacher video .) 2. Use the blank graph below to chart the velocity of each galaxy versus its distance. 3. How does the shape of your graph compare with the results that Hubble found? [Insert answer here] 4. In the table above, calculate the age of the universe as measured by each galaxy. To calculate the age, take the distance (in Mpc) and divide by the velocity (in Mm/s). The number you get will be the age of the universe in billions of years. 5. Calculate the average age of the universe as determined by your data table. Write your value below and comment on how it compares to the accepted value of 13 billion years. [Insert answer here] Hubble’s Law graph If drawn by hand, be sure to scan (or take a picture of) your completed graph and include it in
this document. Completing the Lab 1. Return to the course and complete the lab quiz to demonstrate your understanding. 2. Submit your completed lab document using your instructor’s online dropbox .
