Investigation 15 – Magnetic Field Lines Activity 1 – Real and Simulated Fields 1. With the entire class, investigate the magnetic field lines of a bar magnet using a compass, and compare the results in real-time to the simulation: https://www.olabs.edu.in/?sub=74&brch=9&sim=74&cnt=4 . 2. Is there agreement between the simulation and the demonstration from class? Are there any locations that the fields do not match? Activity 2 – Field Lines 1. Sketch the magnetic field lines of a bar magnet using the simulation. Make your drawing large enough that you can see the important details and features of the field. 2. Sketch the magnetic field lines of the Earth. You can use this simulation: https://simphy.com/weblets/earth-magnetic-field-simulation-3d/ . 3. List some similarities and differences between a bar magnet field and the Earth’s magnetic field. 4. What is the relationship between the Earth’s geographic and magnetic poles? 5. When you are done, be sure to submit your sketches with the rest of your investigation. Extensions 1. What is the direction of the magnetic field lines at points 1, 2, and 3? In your explanation, be sure to include how we define the direction of a magnetic field. Make sure to show your work and/or explain your reasoning. 2. True or false: Scientists have been able to isolate a North pole of a magnet. Make sure to show your work and/or explain your reasoning.
