Lab 4: Determination of Spring Constant Jailynn Diaz 06/13/2023 Physics with Medical Applications: PHY 1007C
1 Introduction In this experiment, we will be given two springs with different spring constants and will be attaching different masses to each spring to record data. The purpose of this experiment is to compare the values of each spring on a plotted graph to calculate their spring constant. We will find the spring force using this formula: Fs = -kx (Fs- spring force, k- spring constant, x- extension) Experimental Setup The link above shows the experimental determination of the spring constant. I will recommend you use Excel to plot the force (N) verse extension (m) graphs. The gradient (slope) is the spring constant. More information about this experiment can be obtained online. In this experiment, you are provided with data for two different springs. Plot the graphs and compare the individual slopes with the known spring constants provided at the top of each table. Write your report following the format for lab reporting as usual Data Data; Table 1.1 Known Value of Green Spring: 50N/m Mass (kg) Extension (m) W=mg (N) 0.55 0.07 5.39 0.75 0.105 7.35

4 Calculations Green Spring Experimental Spring Constant: 50.7 N/m Blue Spring Experimental Spring Constant: 29.2 N/m % Error Calculations: Green spring Known= 50 N/m %= |50 - 50.7| Experimental= 50.7 N/m ______________ x 100 = 1.4 % | 50 | Blue Spring Known= 30 N/m %= |30 - 29.2| Experimental= 29.2 N/m ______________ x 100 = 2.6 % | 30 | Conclusion In this experiment, I calculated the experimental spring constant of two springs. I was given the known values of both springs, the green being 50 N/m, and the blue being 30N/m. I calculated my experimental values for green to be 50.7 N/m and blue to be 29.2 N/m. When looking at both values they are extremely comparable and only a bit off from each other. I was successfully able to calculate the spring constant in this experiment using data from the lab and graphing.
