Week 1 Weekly Reflection
As we embark on our study of Ethics, it is important to establish our
own personal understanding and connection to ethics.
:
1.What are ethics?
Ethics are defined as principles that govern a person’s behavior.
Ethics are inevitable, whether it be in a work field, field of
education, or even in every day life.
Ethics are the principles that
keep people on the straight and narrow.
2.Why do we need ethics in Psychology?
Psychology needs ethics because we primarily study people. When
studying people, they tend to become vulnerable, especially when
seeking help. Ethics ensures that no one is taking advantage of
when they are in that state of mind.
3. What other professions (at least three) do you know of that have an
ethics code and who creates that ethics code? The biggest one
besides psychology would have to be healthcare. Healthcare stands
big on the ethical principle of HIPPA. Similarly, the other two that I
see practicing ethical codes in their professions would be attorneys
& social workers. Both of these professions hold confidentialities to a
big standard as they’re protecting the people that they are working
with.
4.What does it mean to have a professional violate these ethics? How
does it impact their clients and society?
When any professional violates the code of ethics that is
standardized for their profession, it gives people in the entire
profession, a bad rap. This makes society skeptical of assuring
those that are that other position. For example, if a therapist is
caught sleeping with their client, and upon getting caught, uses
their sessions against said client, this gives therapists, especially
ones within the same company or field a bad representation. This
then makes a Public skeptical to work with therapists going forward,
especially in the sense of parents looking for Therapist for their
children.
5. What is an example that you can think of where ethics were
violated (this can be in any situation). How was the violation
discovered and what was was the result?
The primary example that I can use for a reference to this question,
would have to be at my current job. I work at FCC behavioral health,
recently someone who was working with clients, took the fact that
they were using substances and their situation against them, and
turned them in to which they got in trouble. Working in this field, our
goal is not to get someone in trouble, our goal is to mmhelp
someone do better. So not only did this worker break HIPPA, but they
also defeated the purpose of us as a company to help this individual
get help. This was discovered by comparing the note that the
individual had made in reference to the client compared to the
report that the court had. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what
happened on the clients behalf other than he might have had to
serve some time, and then which she would then have to re-enroll in
our program to continue to help himself. However, as far as the
worker she was faced with consequences which included being fired,
and potentially outside consequences as well for breaking HIPAA.
