Chapter 1- Themes and Purposes, problems in living, self-sufficiency and barriers, the human service
profession
In California, growth rates for Social and Human Services paraprofessionals is
a very good +17%.
NOHS stands for
National Organization for Human Services
Explain what the text refers to as a "problems in living". Your Answer:
The textbook defines "problems in living" as the interaction of
individual problems or issues, issues and challenges linked to lifespan
development, problems situated in a challenging environment, and
difficulties that arise from social justice issues.
In the case study of Almeada and Anne in chapter 1, the clients have a number
of "problems in living".
Note three of these problems.
Include a description of
each problem in living that is described in the case study. Your Answer:
Three
problems in living that Almeada and baby Anne faced were their poor living
facility, the lack of a livable wage and decent hours at work, the inability to
afford proper day care, and lack of food.
Assisting clients in meeting their social needs with a focus on those who
cannot care for themselves is referred to as
social care
Rehabilitation is relevant when
a client is injured in an automobile accident
The human service professional needs to develop networks primarily to
link
clients to services
The currrent use
of the term "human service generalist"
describes
a
professional who works with the client using both the micro and macro
perspective.
The following are social justice issues:
poverty, lack of housing and
availability of healthcare
Social justice is a term used specifically in relation to the work social workers
do.
False
Evidence based practice is important because
it provides an understanding
of how to achieve desired outcomes
A standard ethical principle of Human Service Workers is to honor "self-
determination". Which of the following is an example of that principle?
Client
and worker discuss options for childcare for client's child. The client
chooses to leave child with relatives who use drugs against the advice
of the human service worker. The worker is concerned about the client's
choices. Client comes back next week, worker discusses implications of
her previous choices. (
This shows that the worker understands that the
client may make choices which are not in his/her best interest, but still
engages client in conversation without rejecting client or terminating
services.)
The role of the person that gathers information, performs assessment,
arranges and monitors services and provides direct services is called:
Case
Manager
Use the information
in your textbook
to describe what "social justice" is IN
YOUR OWN WORDS.
Social justice means that you believe everyone is
entitled to the same opportunities and human rights and the desire
to ensure it is provided.
According to your textbook
: What is the value in providing services in
partnership with other agencies? Provide 3 benefits
. 3 benefits of
providing services in partnership with other agencies are that it
provides "more efficient and more effective service," the services
being provided are more effective because there is not a single
person trying to work in multiple roles, and provided services can
also be more cost-effective when working with other agencies.
Chapter 2- Motivations for becoming a helper, important values,
characteristics of helpers, helper categories, nonprofessional helper and
volunteers, cultural broker
Broker:
Updates and maintains a community resource binder so that
providers can be easily identified.
Case Manager:
Provides counseling to client who has recently
experienced a loss in the family.
Advocate:
Talks to social services supervisor to ask that client's right
to services be re-evaluated.
Educator:
Prepares curriculum for a Life Skills Group
Organizer:
Brings community people and providers together to plan
services for at-risk youth
Recognizing stereotypes, biases, and cultural differences is part of the process
of
Self-Awareness
Which of the 5 Human Service VALUES does the following statement reflect?
"I believe that all of my clients have the right to decide how they want to live,
even if I don't agree with their choices."
Self- Determination
Values are the groundwork for creating a
philosophy of helping
True
What is as significant as helping methods in helping?
Personal Characteristics
Family members, neighbors, friends and church members are part of a
network of:
Natural Helpers
Three roles played by Human Service workers are: Direct Service, Community
Service and Volunteer Service.
FALSE
(Those are types of helping/service,
not specific roles played by workers.
Those roles are listed above in question
2)
The work that helpers do in their face to face encounters with clients is
known as:
Direct Service
How would it be possible that a manicurist might be a "natural helper" for one
of your clients?
By "listening, responding, and discussing alternatives
to problem situations in which their customers may find
themselves."
Give an EXAMPLE of how you can let a client know that ACCEPTANCE is one of
your values.
How I can let a client know that acceptance is one of my
values is by expressing to them that I am there for them, that who
they are, where they're from, and how they act will not get in the
way of the service I would like to provide for them.
The five commonly agreed upon Values of Human Service Workers are:
The 5
values of human service workers are acceptance, tolerance,
individuality, self-determination, and confidentiality.
Chapter 3- Historical development of helping, human needs since the
middle ages, Elizabethan Poor Laws, individuals influences in Colonial
America, founding of social work profession, 19
th
century philosophies
Until the Middle Ages people believed that mental illness was caused by the
presence of
Evil Spirits
Proponents of laissez-faire economics and Social Darwinism encouraged
government sponsored social welfare provisions as a regular part of a healthy
society.
TRUE
(Those who subscribe to the Laissez-Faire philosophy believe
that it is society's responsibility - not the government's- to take care of those
who are less fortunate. Those who subscribe to the concept of Social
Darwinism believe that it is counter-productive over the long haul to help
those in need, as they believed in "natural selection" and survival of the
fittest.
Neither philosophy supported the idea of government assistance for
those in need)
Jane Adams was the founder of the Charity Organization society in America.
TRUE
(Jane Adams was a founding member of Hull House, which was a
Settlement House.)
Jane Adams:
Recognized that social and economic causes played a part in
poverty.

Mary Richmond:
Instrumental in defining the focus of "social workers"
Clifford Beers:
Founder of the Mental Health Hygiene movement
Benjamin Rush:
Considered the "father of American psychiatry"
Dorothea Dix:
Fought for more humane treatment for those with mental
illness.
Human services flourished under all of the following presidents EXCEPT
Reagan
A major component of the welfare reform legislation PRWORA was to
turn the
responsibility of welfare over to the states
(
Prior to the Personal Responsibility
and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Clinton), needy families
could receive monthly payments under the AFDC program.
The PRWOA
ended that program and instead created a new program with stricter
timelines and regulations called TANF -Temporary Assistance to Needy
Families. The stated purpose of the program was to end welfare dependency
by helping needy families find ways to support their family (work, education)
instead of depending on the government.)
The social philosophy of individualism asserts that:
the individual is solely
responsible for his/her success or failure, anyone in America can
succeed financially if they are willing to work hard, and
poverty is a
sign of spiritual weakness
FDR is responsible for creating
WPA, CCC, and Social Security
during his
legislation.
New Federalism represented a shirft in the government's approach to human
services by
Calling for individuals to assume responsibility for their own
situations, Decreasing federal spending for human services, and
Emphasizing the development of self help programs to be provided by
the private sector.
The president who introduced the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and declared an
"unconditional war on poverty" was:
Johnson
Welfare Reform, otherwise known as PRWOA, was established under President
Clinton
Describe an argument
AGAINST
Universal Healthcare.
Why are many people
in the US against this idea?
Many people in the US are against the idea
of Universal Healthcare because they believe it would be too
expensive and cause a raise in taxes.
What does it mean to EMPOWER a client? How did the Settlement House
Movement empower residents? (What did the program offer to empower
residents?)
Empowering a client means supporting them and
providing them with resources for whatever it is that they may need,
whether that be listening, or providing them with tools for change
for the purpose of helping them towards self-sufficiency.
The
Settlement House Movement empowered residents by providing
food and shelter as well as education and training. This provided
people with what they needed to change what was contributing to
their poverty.
Chapter 4- 6 principles that underlie ethical practice, client welfare, codes
of ethics, vignettes, ethical decision-making model steps
Ethical dilemmas occur when there is a discrepancy between what a worker is
inclined to do and what the professional standards note is safe, and
appropriate to do.
The ethical dilemma in case 1 is competence. While Sue is helping out
because they are short-staffed where she works, she is not qualified,
and therefore not competent to do some of the work that she is doing.
Sue should let her employer know that she does not feel qualified to do
some of these things.
Sue likes to be helpful and wants to do all that
she can for her clients, but if she is not qualified to perform the work,
she is putting her clients at risk.
She should inform her supervisor
immediately of the dilemma.
The ethical dilemma in case 2 is responsibility. This is because it is not ethical
to have sexual relationships with your client. This goes against Standard 6.
While George may be trying to help his client understand men better, I
believe there must be a better way at accomplishing it, I'm just not sure what
it would be.
George is likely feeling sympathy and compassion for his client,
however: Sexual relationships with clients are unethical and forbidden.
The social dilemma in case 3 is responsibility. Natalia is responsible for her
client's well-being. By providing her clients with cigarettes, she is going
against the doctor's recommendations and is not therefore protecting them
from harm. Natalia likely wants to provide them with cigarettes because she
wants to be nice and see them happy, but knows she shouldn't. Natalia
should tell her clients that it isn't something she can help with.
The social dilemma in case 4 is responsibility. Jim is responsible for the well-
being of his clients, and finding the resources he needs to do his job to the
best of his ability. Jim obviously finds that he connects better with the
children with one-on-one time, but the rule only states that you can't use a
private vehicle. Jim should talk to his supervisor about if there is a company
vehicle he can use, or get permission to use his own.
In case 5 the issue that exists around worker responsibility is that Bradley
doesn't have the full resources or sufficient time to work with clients. This
means Bradley is responsible for "locating or developing resources." Bradley
needs to speak with someone about getting some help to be able to fulfill his
duties.
The issue that exists around confidentiality in case 1 is that someone
divulged the name of a child receiving care with Joe. Joe should investigate
the people that could be the culprits.
Client rights in case 2 is determined by a right to privacy. The client does not
want the helper to share the information about them getting an abortion at
an early age.
The client has a right to ask the staff member to keep the
information confidential and the staff member should respect that right.
If
the information is necessary for the whole staff to know in order to provide a
current service then the worker should explain that to the client and see if the
client will allow the info to be discussed.
If it is not currently relevant to the
current needs or services then the information should be kept confidential.
Client rights in case 5 is determined by informed consent. Informed consent
states that "it is the client's right to know about the qualifications of the
helper." If Emile wants them to trust him and have confidence in him, then he
should be open about being a student.
Chapter 6- Medical model, public health model, human service model
What are 2 of the treatments that are commonly used today by the medical
model to treat mental disorders?
antidepressant drugs and antianxiety
drugs
The----model assumes that mental disorders are organically-based diseases
or illnesses that impair functioning.
Medical
Philosophical assumptions that guide the practice of each model include
beliefs about all EXCEPT:
the role of the patient
Treatment in the medical model includes all EXCEPT:
societal control
The goal of the public health model is to p
rovide opportunities and conditions for
health as a basic human right
TRUE
Which model focuses on and serves large populations rather than individuals.
Public Health
The human service philosophy emphasizes the responsibilities of society and
the importance of working with
the whole person
The model that focuses on "symptom-diagnosis-treatment-cure" is
Medical
When helping an individual solve problems as a human service worker, which
is the LEAST important of the following questions:
What was the mindset of
the person in the past?
Both the medical model and the public health model have in common:
using
medical interventions,
delivering service to cure an illness, and dealing
with consequences of family violence
Which model would be interested in collecting data on drug overdoses?
Public Health
What is the problem solving method?
The problem-solving method is
a method that first identifies the problem, determines clients'
strengths, and cultural aspects of their lives, and then identifies
which type of intervention would be best.
Which model of delivery is most likely to use the problem solving
method?
The model of delivery that is most likely to use this method
is the human service model.
How can a strength based approach be useful when engaging clients in
problem solving
?
A strength-based approach can be useful when
engaging clients in problem-solving because it focuses on resources,
coping mechanisms, resilience, and strengths that the client has.
This helps focus on the positive, rather than the negative.
Name one type of problem that might be addressed by all three of the service
models AND explain how each service model might be involved in solving

that problem:
One problem that might be addressed by all 3 service
models is addiction. The medical model could address this by having
doctors who are medically prescribing medications at a rehab facility
to help the clients there through their withdrawals. The public
health model could have people spreading awareness about
addiction by going to schools and educating them on the issue, or by
having public speakers. This helps not only create awareness but
also prevent this from occurring with more people. The human
services model could provide treatment at a rehab facility like group
therapy, or individual therapy where the problem-solving approach
is used.
Chapter 7- Distinguish helping relationships from other relationships,
stages of helping process, essential skills of a helping relationship,
nonverbal and verbal communication, working one-on-one and with
groups, challenging clients, culturally different clients
ACCORDING TO THE TEXTBOOK
What are 3 characteristics that are unique to the formal helping
relationship?
1. Helping relationships are formed for a recognized and
agreed-upon purpose; they are goal-oriented. 2. A helping
relationship is time-bound, which means it usually occurs over
several sessions; the relationship ends when the purpose has been
accomplished. 3. The helping relationship carries authority. The
helper's authority consists of the knowledge and skills that enable
him or her to work with the client toward resolving the problem.
ACCORDING to THE TEXTBOOK Describe 3 things a helper will want to attend
to before the client arrives.
1. The physical setting. Are there any
barriers that will prevent or make it difficult to establish a
relationship with the client? 2. How will you handle note-taking,
filling out forms, and recording information? 3. The helper needs to
review the information about the client that is already accessible.
List the 5 stages of the helping process,
as given in your textbook
, and
give an example of one thing you might do during each stage.
1.
Preparation:
attend to things in question 2 above. 2. The client
arrives:
Greet client, show concern for their immediate needs
(parking, sitting down, etc
....
) 3. Exploring the problem:
Discuss
current issues that brought them to you. 4. Intervention strategies:
et goals, plan interventions, example: relaxation exercises,
counseling, support groups, AA meetings, etc. 5. Ending client
services:
When goals are met, summarize progress and , refer
elsewhere if necessary.
As described in your textbook
: Describe 2 ways that Crisis Intervention
work
is different from
other types of planned interventions? (other than the fact that a crisis is involved!)
Crisis
help usually shorter term, requires immediate access to assistance,
helps deal with immediate problem - current life situation, work
goal: re-establish client's equilibrium (as opposed to solving long
term chronic issues), work must establish rapport quickly, usually
more than one helper involved, often referral to other services for
follow up
Attending behavior is when a worker listens to a client and demonstrates that
they are understanding what that client is saying with verbal and non-verbal
responses, such as maintaining good eye contact, leaning forward, and
demonstrating verbal tracking.
TRUE
Motivational interviews focuses on
The client's approach to change
A situational crisis is one in which there is usually an accident involved.
TRUE
A psychoeducational group is:
a group where the facilitator educates
clients on topics related to health and mental health
You have a group of clients who are all experiencing depression and you are
facilitating a group for these clients.
What type of group would you
facilitate?
1. Self-help group 2. The goal of my group would be to help
those experiencing depression get a handle on it and provide a safe
space to discuss their thoughts and provide support to help them
achieve their goals. 3. Something that the group could cover is what
depression can cause inside our bodies, and ways to cope with it.
AA is an example of what type of group that is discussed in your textbook?
Self-help
List the 4 developmental phases of a crisis, as
listed in your textbook
, and
explain what typically is happening for the client in each stage:
Phase 1:
The individual reacts to a traumatic event with increased anxiety.
Then the person responds with problem-solving mechanisms to
reduce or eliminate stress. Phase 2: The person's problem-solving
ability fails. What caused the initial rise in anxiety continues. Phase
3: Anxiety levels increase and attempts at resolution fail. Phase 4: A
state of crisis results when the problem remains unresolved and the
tension and anxiety rise to an unbearable degree.
Chapter 8- The whole person, problems in living approach expands an
understanding, differentiate perspectives of client problems, situational
problems, lifespan problems, hierarchy of needs, wellness model,
strengths model, environmental influences, feminist perspective
The term client refers to all but ONE of the following:
Students, teachers,
coworkers
The human service professional in charge of housing services serves the
whole person
by
providing housing, while also noting client's needs
Two components of a problem are
a description and a course of action.
Central to understanding who a client is and what problems are encountered
is the idea that
problems are a normal part of life
Feminists support the idea that women should be equal to men, socially and
economically.
TRUE
Client satisfaction is related to the client's perception of the helper
TRUE
The feminist perspective is a perspective that challenges
The existing
power and hierarchy
According to Maslow’s theory
the bottom level of the pyramid addresses
which needs?
Food, rest and shelter.
How can Maslow's hierarchy of needs be useful to a human service worker in
developing an intervention plan? Give an example to illustrate your point.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be used to develop an intervention
plan by getting the client to focus on basic needs first like shelter
food and rest, before moving on to more intense needs like
becoming independent. It can help map out a plan of what to focus
on first and what to move on to when those needs have been met.
Provide an example of 4 barriers that clients may experience when they want
to, or need to, get help.
1. Clients could be too embarrassed to admit
there is a problem, leading them to be less likely to ask for help. 2.
Clients may be reluctant to ask for help or share their problems
because they see the helper as a stranger. 3. The client could come
from an ethnic background where sharing problems and concerns
with those who are outside of their family is frowned upon. 4. Cost
could be a barrier for a client because they may not be able to afford
to get help.
Chapter 9- Agency mission and goals, common elements of job
description, ways to understand structure of an agency, resources an
agency might use, community mapping, referral process, information
network, allocation of resources, recordkeeping, turf issues,
encapsulation, burnout, vicarious trauma
List and describe the four stages of the 4-step referral process as described in
your textbook.
1. Explain: Explain to the client why the referral is
happening and make sure they know that it is for the client's own
good. 2. Describe the Services: Describe to the client the services
the referral agency provides, and as much other information
available to make the client more comfortable in making the initial
contact. 3. Know the Contact: Get the name of the contact person, as
well as a phone number, email address, physical address, and
directions there. 4. Transmit information: Send the appropriate
information about the client to the new service agency, taking
special consideration in what they need to know.
The textbook describes ways in which paperwork is important. Describe 3
functions that paperwork serves.
1. It provides a permanent record of
the services received by the client 2. It becomes a vehicle for
organizing what is known about the client and what services are
needed 3. It is read by professionals who serve the clients at the
same time, or in the future
Describe 3 reasons why a referral to another agency might be necessary for
one of your clients.
1. The client might request a referral 2. The helper
is unable to provide the assistance necessary to solve the client's
problems 3. The client may be in psychological distress and require
intensive therapy or crisis intervention that the professional cannot
provide in the human services setting
Vicarious trauma occurs when the trauma becomes part of the worker's
worldview.

Define Vicarious Trauma in your own words AND provide an example of
vicarious trauma.
Vicarious trauma can be caused by being exposed to
clients that are experiencing severe trauma. An example would be
someone working in CPS and having multiple child clients who have
experienced sexual abuse.
The worker may become overly suspicious
of males or not allow her own children to be alone.
What can lead a human service worker to "burnout"? List 3 signs that a
worker might be experiencing burnout.
1. Burnout can be a result of
negative changes in attitudes and behavior that are precipitated by
job strain. 2. Poor work performance, reacting to a less-than-perfect
work setting, disappointment in client motivations.
Chapter 10- Mental health, wraparound, community corrections,
community schools, hospice, human service challenges in rural areas,
human services in military, technology to deliver human services, needs of
elderly, challenges of a new workplace, bipartisanship
An example of a diversity issue that needs to be considered when working with
clients is AGE. Three other examples of human diversity issues that must be
considered and understood by human service workers are:
Race, gender, and
sexual orientation.
Community-based care is
focused on health and wellness
Recruitment and retaining helpers, distance,
and cost are
challenges to
service provision in rural areas
The focus of community-based mental health has changed
to a
focus on
health and wellness
A term that indicates strong support of one party’s platform is xenophobia.
FALSE The correct answer is "partisanship".
The following facts are true about Aging in America: By 2030, the increased
number of elderly will be better educated, more diverse; a large number of
the aging will be women; and those over 85 will continue to increase in
number.
TRUE
What is the goal of services provided to military personnel and their families?
To help injured service members learn to help themselves and each
other, To provide direct programs and services to that meet the
needs of injured service members, To identify and treat members
with PTSD, and To assess service members mental health and well-
being.
Partisanship:
approaching issues with only one philosophical stance
systems of care:
provides a comprehensive approach to assistance
of specific populations
community based services:
enable clients to interact with their
environments in the least restrictive setting in which they can
function
wraparound services:
focus on individual treatment plans and
providing a variety of services in community setting
List and describe 3 ways in which the use of technology has a positive impact
on the delivery of human services (as noted in your textbook!)
1. Can help
clients learn new skills 2. Improve communication with helpers and
others 3. Integrate ongoing support to individuals and families in
need
How will Politics influence your ability to provide services to clients? Provide a
description along with an example
.
"Human services agencies and
organizations may be affected in
different ways, depending on their
relationship to federal and state
governments, their funding
sources, and their missions.
Governmental
policies
determine
who
are clients
and ways that clients may be
served; funding influences the resources we
have to
help the
increasing number of those in need." An example of how politics can
affect human services is that Governor Newsome just passed a bill
that can impact funding in California for human services, which can
impact services being provided because some companies may no
longer be able to employ as many people as they used to be, or for
some companies could positively impact the number of clients they
can serve.
