04.02 Argumentative Writing Planner
Part I: Plan Your Argument
Once you’ve selected your topic, it’s time to plan. For this assignment, you’ll need to locate at least two credible
sources. You’ll use these to support your claim and rebuttal.
My Responses
My Topic
Highlight your selected topic:
Do photo filters on social media negatively impact self-esteem?
Does reality television promote dangerous stereotypes?
Should energy drinks be banned for anyone under the age of 18?
Should owning exotic pets be illegal?
My Audience
What type of person likely
holds the opposing
perspective? Think about their
age, background, beliefs, etc.
My audience is (you may use complete sentences or a bulleted list):
Any person who is interested in owning or already owns an exotic pet
My Claim
What is
my
perspective, or
position, on this topic? Do not
use an “I” or “I believe”
statement.
My claim:
I believe that owning an exotic pet should be illegal because they could be dangerous
for not only you but the people you live with or anyone around that animal.
Reason #1
What is a reason for my claim
that is supported with evidence
from my sources? Complete
this section using a quote or a
paraphrase from a credible
source.
Reason to support my claim:
For example, tigers and lions are a common exotic animal, there has been several
reported attacks from tigers attacking humans, not just severely injuring them, but
killing them as well.
Evidence (quote or paraphrase from credible source):
“The exotic animal trade is dangerous for humans as well. There have been
dozens of attacks by captive big cats on humans in the past decade. In one
incident, a tiger mauled his guardian’s 3-year-old grandson. A lion killed
several dogs and trapped a child in his room, and a Bengal tiger tore off the
arm of a 4-year-old boy.”
Source URL:
Exotic Animals as 'Pets' | PETA
I know this source is credible because:
PETA is a nonprofit animal organization that teaches humans about how to ethically
treat animals. They even hold protests to fight for animals rights.
Reason #2
What is another reason for my
claim that is supported with
evidence from my sources?
Complete this section using a
quote or a paraphrase from a
credible source.
Reason to support my claim:
wild animals are meant to be wild and not domesticated. They’re characteristics are
that of wild animals so when domesticated, they don’t know how to act properly.
Evidence (quote or paraphrase from credible source):
“
Exotic animals — lions, tigers, wolves, bears, reptiles, non-human primates
— belong in their natural habitats and not in the hands of private individuals

as “pets.” By their very nature, these animals are wild and potentially
dangerous and, as such, do not adjust well to a captive environment.”
Source URL:
The Dangers of Keeping Exotic Pets | Born Free USA
I know this source is credible because:
Born free USA runs one of the largest primate sanctuaries in the us, their sources are
free from bias and backed up with evidence, it’s a very trustworthy organization
that’s extremely credible.
The Counterclaim
What is an
opposing
perspective on this topic?
The counterclaim:
Exotic animals are very unique therefore would make a cool and fun pet
My Rebuttal
Why is the counterclaim
incorrect or logically flawed?
Do not use an “I” or “I believe”
statement.
What evidence do I have to
support my rebuttal?
My rebuttal:
Is it really worth taking an animal out of its natural habitat just for fun? Taking an
exotic pet out of their natural habitat may very well affect their health, its impossible
to fully mimic their natural environment when they’re domesticated.
Evidence (quote or paraphrase from credible source):
“The reality is, taking exotic and unusual animals out
of their natural habitats can
inhibit their health and
reduce chances for survival
. Exotic animals subsist
on aspects of their environment that cannot be fully
replicated in a domestic setting.”

How Exotic Pets Pose Serious Threats To Their Owners, Neighbors And The
Communities They Are Brought Into - The Animal Rescue Site News
(greatergood.com)
I know this source is credible because:
The animal rescue site is marked top ten of the best official websites in the us and
abroad. They work to make a respectful view on how humans look at animals. Its also
free from bias and is backed up with evidence.
