Theology Essay
When I hear the word theology I honestly think about classes with similar sounding
names like psychology or philosophy. These classes to me all sound like a headache and require
a bunch of deep thinking into all these questions of existence or the human mind, etc. Theology
falls into the same category for me, it all seems confusing. But that is just my first impression
and I’m sure that I am very wrong. Theology definitely seems better already since it is about God
and any discussion about God is fascinating to me even though I’ve been raised up believing and
surrounded by those who believe. Theology also comes to my mind as something similar to an
apologetics class just in that the more you study God the more it seems to be obvious that he
exists rather than never existed. But I also have a first impression that I will dislike this type of
class because it ends with the “ology” and I’ve had bad experience with psychology and
philosophy which to me is a very similar type of class. I hope I am wrong and that Theology
does not turn out to be as confusing and head scratching as philosophy or psychology.
I would think that I have had no experience in the past with theology. I took an
apologetics class last semester and one in high school but I do not think that is the same thing.
Similar maybe but not the exact same. I’m sure I have unconsciously partaken in theology
throughout my life because every at some point in their life has questions about their existence
and a higher power like God. I have been raised in a Christian household and have spent my life
in church which is all connected to theology. After all, reading the Bible is studying God’s word,
Jesus' life on earth, and accounts of many other biblical characters' experiences with God or
Jesus Christ. This is my first class on theology but looking back on my life I would say it was
surrounded by theology and still is especially as I go through many difficult and rough times
where I question God and if he’s really present and with me. So I would say compared to other
people in the world who aren’t Christians I do have some experience with theology in the past
and my present.
For this Theology class I would really like to take something out of this class that really
sticks with me for the rest of my life. I often find myself taking classes and really just going
through the motions trying to get a good grade, get the class over with, and move on without
truly learning anything. I don’t want this to happen in a class that could be very important for my
walk with God and possibly strengthen my faith significantly as I go through some very rough
times in my life right now. I hope to apply myself more to class which is so important because I
do want to learn more about God and His existence. As a man with many doubts and questions, a
class at such a great Christian school is quite a blessing and I hope to capitalize on this
opportunity set before me. Even though I was raised as a Christian is important that I develop a
relationship and faith of God on my own because no one else can do it for me. Lastly of course, I
wouldn’t mind finishing strong and getting a decent grade haha.
