What would you do if you were providing a psychological test to a counseling client and an issue
arose in which your ethics conflicted with the established state and federal laws and codes of ethics?
Provide an example to support your response.
This obviously presents a conundrum as we are driven by our emotions and strongly held beliefs. As a
Christian, I disagree with the choice of individuals who are transgender or transitioning. As a counselor, it
is my role to support preferred pronouns and lifestyle decisions as a non-bias outside observer, even if I
disagree with the individuals’ choices. This is contrary to my faith as I do not believe that God makes
mistakes. I feel that people are born the gender that God assigns for a reason.
This is contrary to the
“woke culture” of today.
Where I currently work, there are many individuals who identify as the opposite
gender as assigned at birth, both clients and staff alike. The way by which I communicate and counsel is
that of love and compassion. It is not my place to shame anyone, or marginalize. Jesus himself ate with
sinners, the ones that were shunned by the world. He showed grace and love to all people; the one
without sin was able to show grace. If this is true for Him, how dare I pass judgment on others when I
myself am a sinner as well. If I were to pass judgment on a client for their lifestyle decisions, it could be
seen as discrimination and could create more harm than good. The client could be feeling rejected by
their family and with similar emotions expressed from their counselor, they could turn to self-harm or
death by suicide due to a feeling of isolation and being misunderstood. According to the ACA Code of
Ethics, we are to do no harm. Our actions and bias on anothers lifestyle could indirectly cause the harm
we are trying to avoid.
