Personal Philosophy of Education Abigail March College of Education: Grand Canyon University ECE – 120: Early Childhood Foundations and the Teaching Profession Delfranece Eppinger March 5 th , 2023
Regarding education, every teacher has their own personal philosophy on how they are going to teach their students. In conjunction with a personal philosophy comes the teachers individual teaching style. My own personal teaching philosophy states that every child should be provided the opportunity to learn in an environment that provides them with the opportunities to learn and grow socially, emotionally, physically, and mentally. I personally will provide these specific learning opportunities in multiple different ways to accommodate all my students' different learning styles. Technology is something that will be used in my classroom daily, and it will be used in a way that provides the students with the opportunity to get super comfortable with it and be able to use it outside the classroom as well. My main mission and philosophy will be to guide and mold my students into the best possible version of themselves. In doing so they will eventually become upstanding citizens, being the best, they can possibly be not only in the classroom but in their families and the greater community as well. So, in the end all my students with be impeccable examples inside the classroom because as we all know the world is full of amazing and wonderful people and because of that everyone should be made to feel welcome and like they belong. So, because of all of this it is my desire and dream to create an inclusive environment where students feel like they have the opportunity to thrive and meet their full potential. Students learn best through experiences and the outcomes of those experiences will be noticed drastically through the work that the students are producing. Along with that it will also be noticed in the student's ability to adapt to different techniques and learning styles that I am using inside the classroom. Semi-structured schedules in my opinion are how students are going to get the most out of their learning. Having a set amount of time where they are learning and gathering information from their peers and classmates while also having a set amount of time
that is highly structured and they are learning from me and the lesson plans that I created. Vygotsky’s theory of child development states that I as a teacher need to carve out time where my students are learning sole from me, but I also need to carve out time for when my students are learning things from their more skilled peers. Which could either be through social actions or play. In doing so they will end up becoming masters at language skills, problem solving, and developing and maturing their own thoughts and feelings. This theory is something that I strongly believe in and is something that I am really interested in finding different ways to implement in my classroom. Different types of hands-on experiences are how students are going to learn the best. So, because of that I am going to implement multiple different types of hands-on experiences inside my classroom. The children will be able to move around freely and explore lots of different things. Social interactions with peers are also a super significant part of a child's development and because of that I am going to set up my classroom in a super specific way that allows for my students to have the opportunity to investigate and experience a significant amount of trial and error and messiness which in my opinion is how my students are going to learn the most. Technology is becoming a significantly important aspect in society and because of that I am going to create an agreement within my classroom that allows my students to have the opportunity to use either iPads, computers, or any other electronic device in a safe and appropriate manner. Technology can be used as an additional resource or material inside the classroom in conjunction with multiple different educational resources and websites like National Geography, PBS Kids or IXL. Inside my classroom technological use would be limited to an hour or less a day, that way it doesn’t consume my student's entire educational experience. Though when it is used it would provide students with the opportunity to gain confidence in their

technological use so when they leave the classroom, they are able to navigate any type of technology with focus and accuracy. Having a semi-structured schedule implemented within my classroom will provide me with the opportunity to create classroom rules. Rules that my students must follow in order to help guide their behavior and make sure that they are behaving in an appropriate manner. When an issue between two or more of my students arises, it is my responsibility to be a non- judgmental third party. Listening to all sides of the issue and then helping my students come up with a plan that doesn’t just resolve the issue but also provides an opportunity for my students and I to create a cohesive classroom where everyone has the chance and opportunity for success. Redirection is something that I am very fond of and am going to implement inside my classroom as a strategy to use whenever I see a student who needs a break. In early childhood education children are at such a young age and because of that it is super important to provide your students with multiple breaks throughout the day. Whether that be a break from the lesson or a break from their peers. If it’s a break from their peers, then it needs to be done in a way that when their break is over, they can successfully reintegrate back into the classroom without feeling excluded or left out. When breaks from peers are being taken it is important for the student to have open conversations with their peers about their feelings and for me as a teacher to model age-appropriate behavior inside the classroom. Because when doing so and with the semi- structured schedule my students are given the opportunity to succeed and showcase appropriate behavior as well. What happens inside the classroom isn’t the only thing that counts because collaboration with families outside of the classroom is also super important. Children are set up for more success inside the classroom when families and other community members are deeply involved
in their educational learning. Because of that I as a teacher will do everything I can to make sure that families are highly involved in their child’s education. Whether that be through parent volunteers inside the classroom, at home projects that kids and parents can do together, or providing parents with a list of educational experiences that they can go and experience with their kids. We are only one classroom, but we are a part of a larger community that is made up of multiple different classrooms and staff members. Because of that there are many different people on the school's campus that we rely on for collaborations. Members of the community outside of school are also super important and are people that I try hard to bring in and showcase in my classroom. Whether that be a nurse, police officer, firefighter, doctor, or veterinarian. Providing them with the opportunity to talk to my class and teach them about things that happen outside of school and how their job drastically benefits the community at large. As we all know, it takes a village to mold students into the best possible version of themselves and with the contribution of families and the greater community their minds are greatly shaped and significantly more prepared for whatever the future holds. In my opinion the most important thing is that students and their families feel welcomed, valued, and accepted inside my classroom. At the start of the school year, I will make it a priority to sit down with each family, introduce myself to them, and take the time to learn something unique and interesting about them that I can then apply within my classroom. And when applying it within my classroom I will do it in a way that is respectful but lets the families know that I listened and that I care. On the walls of my classroom, I will hang up pictures of my students' families, but I will also hang up anything from their culture that is super special and important to them. Doing this is super important because when parents are dropping off their kids, they will be able to see how important their culture and family life is to me. Because feeling included and
valued will make my students and their parents see that there is nothing stopping their kids from succeeding and reaching their full potential. As my career is finally starting to take off it is super important that I start to lay down the foundation of a successful classroom and due to my philosophy of education I believe that I will have a successful classroom in any school and community that I join. I will provide my students with the opportunity to have a voice in my class and guide their behavior so that they become good community members. Finding different ways to include their families and cultures, sharing them with their peers. Which allows them to become actively involved in our classroom because as we all know it takes a village to make the world go round. And to conclude from learning to take breaks when you are upset or frustrated, and learning to communicate with your peers which will make your students emotionally ready for the next step in their educational journey but also show them empathy and when is the right time to speak up. Because of this philosophy my students will possess the skills of empathy, emotional awareness and be academically prepared when it comes time to move on to the next class. They will also be able to make sure their peers aren’t just included but that their family members and community members are included as well.
