TKM1 Task 2: Educational Philosophy 1
Jessica Garcia

Task 2: Educational Philosophy
A1: The learning theory that I have selected is the Humanistic/Motivation Approach.
A2: I have selected this theory because I believe that it closely aligns with my current teaching views and practices. It directly correlates with my take on choices, personal growth, and creativity in the classroom. As stated by McLeod (2020), “Humanistic psychology is a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole person, and the uniqueness of each individual”. As in life, and the classroom, everything revolves around our individual choices. Therefore, I make it a priority for students to have the ability to make their own. Students are unique and their educational journey should be as well. Using the humanistic approach allows teachers to cater to the needs of students as individuals, as compared to in groups. This approach may lead to more positive student engagement, largely in part to excitement during learning activities catered to their individual skill set. The teacher falls into a facilitating role, leading students into discovery, reaching their own goals, independently with small guidance. This is possible due to the teacher having full knowledge of each student’s basic skill level and needs, creating a conducive learning environment.

A3: The Humanistic Approach would help me understand the developmentally appropriate needs in the classroom in 3
rd
and 10
th
grade. In the 3
rd
grade, students are starting to feel the difference in what they want and what they are being told. They look for help and guidance in some areas, yet still want to try their hand at independence. They are exploring what they like, who they like, and who they want to be. Teaching at a Title 1 school, I see students with varying environments. They are exploring the world through the eyes of the environment they are in. By using the Humanistic Approach in the 3
rd
grade, I am keeping the focus on the children. Their safety and well-being comes first, always. The basic physiological needs of children must be met before they can be successful in a classroom, i.e. food, shelter, water, clothing. Using the Humanistic Approach in 3
rd
grade, students will be in an environment that enriches their own curiosities, celebrates their uniqueness, and enhances their ability to find what makes them happy in and out of the classroom. In the 10
th
grade classroom, the Humanistic Approach would be applied in a very similar fashion. At this point in life, students can be found trying to redefine themselves. Their interest
might be changing, their self-awareness may be growing, their self-esteem may be coming to the front of who they are. For the first time in their lives, they might be exploring options for the future. Using the Humanistic Approach, I can give my students the ability to govern their educational journey, instead of being told how it should be done. In high school, using this approach, the teacher is more genuine, supportive, and understanding than critical in the learning process

. “Their job is to foster a engaging environment for the students and ask inquiry based questions that promote meaningful learning”

. It would be my goal that I would foster motivation to take control of their education and future, helping them navigate the pressures of high school. A4: Teaching 3
rd
grade in a Title 1 means that I deal with many learning barriers, daily. I believe that it has become even worse since the pandemic. The students currently in 3
rd
grade were never given time in the classroom to build their fundamental, emotional, or social skills. They are truly struggling more than, I believe, anyone ever expected. The Humanistic Approach in my class is helping address these issues, specifically, social/emotional and cognitive domains. These students do not have the knowledge and experience to work with others that perform differently from themselves. They get angry easily, struggle to stay focused, and find school to be useless because they believe the same outcomes can be reached at home with a laptop. By using the Humanistic Approach, I am able to assist my students in feeling as comfortable as possible in my classroom. It is my job to provide the nurturing and support they need in order to feel that sense of security when in my care. Most of my students are dealing with extreme external issues that no adult should have to endure, much less a child. Some of them need someone to just listen, show they care, or teach them how to interact with others; they are not receiving these type of basic needs at home. I can, with the use of this approach, address these issues/concerns comfortably. Once I developed a sense of security in my classroom, my students started to grow academically. They feel comfortable enough to fully immerse themselves in the lessons, giving their attention to the topic and not the external issues that consume so much of their lives.

TKM1 Task 2: Educational Philosophy 4
Many of my current students are experiencing learning delays; some due to the pandemic, some not. However, this is a huge concern, county wide. With access to advanced technology, students do have an immense number of resources to thrive. Unfortunately, the current students have not been taught the appropriate ways that technology can be utilized as an educational resource, not just for videogames. Using the Humanistic Approach, I am utilizing
technology, crafting lessons, and tailoring to the needs of each student in a way that meets each
student where they are, while simultaneously teaching the value of technology in education. Technology has given us the power to address some delays with students without vocalizing it to the entire class. Additionally, it helps with students who may need a repeat of a lesson, or one who missed one. Technology gives us, as educators, the ability to reach our students in various ways. This approach assists me in making sure I give my students the tools they need to utilize their resources and stay on track with their education. A5: The Humanistic approach would help me meet the learning needs of diverse populations of students. In my own experience, my school deals with an extremely low-income population. We struggle greatly with behavior issues due to the culture of the immediate area. It has a huge effect on the learning environment, school wide. This approach is helping me meet the learning needs of my students by giving me the ability to know what type of guidance and support they need. Once I was able to provide them with this, they were able to let the other issues go for a bit and focus on learning. The behavior issues calmed down a lot once multiple big behaviors settled and started feeling more comfortable in class. Once the classroom community felt comfortable, the learning really started taking place. Then I was able

to focus on their learning needs, finding where they needed structure vs. guidance. I found that
some students were performing better individually, while others excelled when collaborating. Providing various lessons with inclusive resources gave way for my students to start conquering their learning goals. It allowed me to accommodate students’ individual needs, gave them the ability to perform in an environment they consider to be reliable. For example, instead of giving the same lesson to every student in the class, I am able to provide varying lessons to meet the needs of the students that are above, on, and below grade level. This will give each group of students the ability to succeed, by taking their individual needs into consideration. It provides more structured lessons and support for lower-level students while simultaneously giving support, yet freedom, for the higher-level students to explore and excel through their own study. When the higher-level students are moving on to the next steps in an activity, I am afforded the opportunity to sit with other students and provide support where needed. I want to ensure that all students are comfortable in their understanding of the material and moving forward with it. The Humanistic Approach allows students to express their feelings and acquire knowledge, all in a nurturing and comfortable environment
