A School Board passes a policy that by September 2006 all district schools must install metal detectors at the front entrance to ensure students do not bring knives/weapons onto school property. a. What assumption is this policy based on? b. Defend this policy using 1 key argument each for consequentialism and nonconsequentialism. 2. At a junior high school dance parent supervisors found stashes of alcohol hidden in four toilet tanks in the girls’ washroom. How the alcohol got there was never discovered, despite the fact that teachers asked a number of students who attended the dance. On Monday morning the principal cancelled all dances for the rest of the year. a. 10. 1. At lunch hour Johnny sells drugs to another student. You find out after the fact from a group of students. Everyone is shocked; there was no indication of trouble, and nobody saw Johnny with drugs. As a teacher are you legally required to report Johnny to the police? Explain. (2 marks) On lunch hour supervision you walk by the boys’ washroom and smell marijuana. When you walk in Johnny ducks into the stall. You wait until the toilet flushes and he comes out. You want to search Johnny and his locker to find out if he has any more drugs, although you do not intend to call the police. Are you allowed to do this? If a search is permissible, how would you conduct it? (3 marks) On a trip to Italy one of your grade 12 honors students gets hit by a car while she and a group were out shopping. You were nearby the shopping area when the event happens. Outline the conditions used to decide teacher negligence to explain whether you could be held negligent. (5 marks) During class the teacher kicks Jane out of class for being recalcitrant. The teacher says, “And you’re not coming back until I get a written apology from you.” Can the teacher do this? Refer to relevant legislation. (2 marks) At parent-teacher interviews, Mrs. Bonnett accuses you of marking too hard and she demands to see the grades of others. She threatens to go to the Board if you don’t show her your marks book. What should you do? Refer to relevant legislation. (2 marks) Lately you notice Jane is reclusive, quite opposite of her typically bubbly personality. Her grades are slipping, and she continuously makes comments, “I’'m stupid, just like my dad says.” She cries after failing a test and comments that her dad is really going to give her a licking this time. You don’t see any physical evidence that Jane’s dad is beating her. What is your legal responsibility? Why? (2 marks) After a job interview in June, the principal tells Sid, “You’d be perfect for this school. You’re hired.” In September, Sid shows up at the school and discovers someone else is teaching the job he interviewed for. What can Sid do and why?
