PHI1200 Skill Development Plan Identify three of the learning outcomes (list), including problem solving, that you would like to further develop. For each outcome, complete all elements of the template, following the assignment instructions. Target Skill 1 Specify the outcome you are developing (such as communication, technology, or innovation): The first outcome I would like to develop is stronger problem-solving skills. Strengths: Describe your strengths. I have strong divergent thinking skills. This allows me to come up with creative new ideas, and to think of many different solutions without fixating on the first idea that comes to mind. Divergent thinking is part of why I’m able to quickly toss out a solution that isn’t working and move on to the next possible idea. For example, when feeding my son snacks while he did schoolwork wasn’t benefiting his health, and was creating too much extrinsic motivation, I moved on to giving him ice chips. This gave him the sensory feedback he was looking for and solved a second medical problem involving dehydration. Being a divergent thinker makes it easy for me to see patterns, and to identify inefficiencies in systems. This is why I was able to see where the inventory intake system at my job needed to be improved. I noticed gaps where others didn’t. I’m open-minded. I’m able to hear the perspectives and ideas of others, even when they challenge my own. I can then piece together the best parts of those ideas to come up with novel solutions. My husband and I don’t always agree about how to solve problems with our son, but being open-minded allows me to listen to, and combine our ideas until we find something that works for everyone. I’m also always open to trying new things suggested by others. I meditate daily. Meditation is a useful tool for solving problems, because it lowers stress levels, and relaxes my mind so that I can think clearly. When I have a difficult problem to solve, I find it helpful to mediate. Afterwards, I write down as many possible solutions as I can think of while my mind is in a peaceful state. I have high emotional intelligence. Problem solving can sometimes be an emotional process, especially when people disagree about a problem or solution. I’m able to empathize with other people, to hear where they are coming from, and to maintain a calm demeanor throughout the problem-solving process. Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement. I need to work on my convergent thinking skills. Being a strong problem solver requires both divergent and convergent thinking. If I strengthened my convergent thinking skills, I would be 1
PHI1200 able to narrow down possible solutions, to the best solution more accurately. I would also be able to stick to a step-by-step problem-solving method without jumping all over the place. I try to stick to one model, but I tend to get overly excited by different ideas, and I don’t always do things in order. Procrastination causes me many issues when problem solving. When a solution requires multiple steps, I tend to feel overwhelmed, and I avoid the tasks necessary to solve the problem. For example, when I realized there were issues with the inventory intake system at my job, I avoided creating an intake sheet draft to show to my boss for several weeks. If I were able to stop procrastinating, I could solve problems faster and more effectively. Especially when the problem is time sensitive. I would like to develop better research skills. When solving problems, I generally rely on ideas that come up based on things that I already know. As I get further into my career, I know that more complex problems will come up that will require strong research skills. Through this course I have realized that self-reflection is an area that I haven’t been focused on. Through self-reflection I could better understand my values, motives, biases, goals, and personal issues which would make me a better problem solver. For example, my son’s biological father doesn’t like him being homeschooled. This puts a lot of pressure on me to make sure I can keep his grades high, and to solve the many problems he has with schoolwork. This pressure clouds my judgement when I feel the need to come up with quick solutions that work here and now, just to get things done, instead of quality solutions that work long-term. Self-reflecting sooner would have helped me to realize this. Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this ability during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this ability looks like. I would like to become a better problem-solver by being more self-reflective, learning ways to stop procrastinating, thinking more convergently at the appropriate stages of problem solving, and by studying research skills and techniques. Improvement would be knowing where and how to research properly to have a better understanding of more complex problems. Developing a regular practice of self-reflection so that I know when I’m biased, my judgment is clouded, or when something doesn’t align with my values or goals. Tackling problems right away without procrastinating, as well as being able to combine both divergent and convergent thought processes. Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development. 2
PHI1200 If I became a better problem solver, I would be a more desirable job applicant. These skills would allow me to solve problems at home and with friends without my judgment being clouded, and I would be able to figure out ways to reach my academic goals more efficiently. Practices for Growth Read books: Thinking fast and slow, By Daniel Kahneman, Reflections for highly effective people, By Stephen R Covey, Do it Today (Overcome procrastination, Improve productivity, And Achieve more meaningful things) By, Darius Foroux, and Anchor System Thinking (The art of situational analysis, problem solving, and strategic planning for yourself, your organization, and society) By, A.I. Shoukry Develop a daily practice of self-reflection by setting aside designated time, and by journaling before and after self-reflecting. Practice doing things here and now instead of avoiding overwhelming steps during problem solving. Describe 2–3 specific strategies that can be used to develop this ability . 3

PHI1200 Action Steps Step 1: Listen to audiobooks as I’m driving, cooking, or cleaning to get through the list of books that will help me better understand and grow in the area of problem-solving. Step 2: Buy a journal to use for self-reflection and set a daily reminder to self-reflect before I go to bed. Step 3: Remove social media apps from my phone to avoid using them to procrastinate. Step 4: Check in with myself when I’m feeling stuck or frustrated to make sure I’m keeping a solution-focused, positive mindset. Describe an action plan around developing your selected outcomes that includes things you can do now to begin working towards your goal. What specific actions are needed to acquire knowledge and build upon your ability ? (Add more if necessary.) Potential Obstacles/Challenges Having ADHD makes coming up with solutions and plans easy, but following through can be difficult. I can understand and articulate problems well, but taking action to solve them rarely goes as planned. I am currently seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist so that I can figure out ways to manage my ADHD better. My time-management skills are weak, so making sure I self-reflect daily is going to take a lot of dedication. I love to read and to learn new things, but if the information is too technical or isn’t engaging, I tend to space out and to miss important parts What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate? 4
PHI1200 Key Supporters Supporter 1. My husband is a strong supporter. He tends to be helpful with time management, and when I tell him my plans or goals, he’s good about periodically checking in to make sure I’m staying on track. He's also very helpful with taking on household tasks or taking care of our children so that I can focus on the things that I need to get done. He’s very honest and doesn’t sugar coat things, so feedback from him is constructive and useful. Supporter 2. My friend Ariona never hesitates to come help with my kids when I have things that I need to focus on. She’s also very helpful and quick to tell me when I’m off track Identify 1–2 individuals that you can check in with, who will provide feedback along the way, and act as trusted supporters. Explain how these supporters will help you meet your goal. 5

PHI1200 Benefits From Change/Connections to Personal, Academic, and Career Goals My personal goal is to homeschool my son effectively. Homeschooling my son has required a large amount of problem solving. Procrastination, a lack of self-reflection, and the inability to think more convergently to pinpoint the most logical long-term solutions has hindered the problem-solving process many times. If I strengthen my problem- solving abilities, I will be able to come up with more effective long-term solutions to help him succeed in school. Seeing that we can solve problems and overcome challenges together will help my son in many other areas of his life. My academic goal is to finish my bachelor’s degree without falling behind or losing financial aid. Lacking self-reflection has been a hurdle when trying to solve my academic struggles. Procrastination has also played a major role. The ability to self-reflect, and to see my own role, and the things I’m in control of changing, will allow me to come up with a better strategy to complete my work on time so that I can meet my academic goals. If I can solve these problems, and meet my academic goals, I’ll be able to meet my professional goal of becoming a therapist. One of my professional goals is to be able to return to work. Strengthening my problem- solving skills will help me to learn the skills necessary to balance my professional, work, and school life, so that I can begin applying for a new job. I had to quit my last position due to the inability to come up with a solution for working, going to school full-time, and homeschooling. Strong problem-solving ability is one of the top skills that employers desire. Improving this area will lead to more achievements, making me a more desirable job candidate. It will also help me to do my job more effectively, which will help more patients when problems arise. Connect your goals around outcomes to three other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals? 7
PHI1200 Target Skill 2 Specify the skill you are developing (such as communication, technology, or productivity): The next skill I would like to develop is information literacy. Strengths: Describe your strengths in this skill. I have strong communication skills. I tend to be very articulate whether the format is verbal, written, or visual, I know how to convey information in a way that’s concise and accurate. I can relay information from research and articles and summarize the relevant points. I know how to tell the difference between reliable and unreliable resources. I know where to look for verified research, and how to check the accuracy of information. I check studies for conflicts of interest, and I verify any links that I see on webpages. I look for reputable sources and avoid blogs and news sites unless they are specifically relevant. I have strong literacy skills and can understand complex topics. When reading studies or professional articles I have the ability to understand the information and can conclude what the main points are. Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement in this skill. I need to learn how to utilize advanced search techniques. I know there are ways to refine searches such as using quotation marks. I only know a few of these techniques and would like to learn more about their many uses. Technology is constantly changing and growing. I need to learn more about new resources for gathering reliable information. I used to think I had strong technology skills, but everything available in the Capella library is confusing and overwhelming to me. I would like to learn more about crediting sources properly, plagiarism, and APA style citations. I don’t have any experience with citing sources, and this is an important part of information literacy. Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this skill during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this skill looks like My desired outcome is that I will learn to efficiently search for and utilize reliable information. Improving my information literacy skills will allow me to learn and convey necessary information more quickly and effectively. Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development 8
PHI1200 I will improve my information literacy skills so that I can locate and relay reliable information in a professional and academic manner. Practices for Growth I can find resources to help me learn more about information literacy, and about proper citations. Educating myself on this topic will be the primary step for growth. Practice researching using search tools that I learn about from information literacy resources. Using these tools enough times will help me remember them, and I will learn to use them properly through trial and error. Practice citing sources. Once I learn how to cite sources properly and how to avoid plagiarism, doing it over and over will help me to remember the proper formats. Describe 2–3 specific strategies that can be used to develop this skill. Action Steps Step 1: Visit the Capella library and go through all of the available resources such as “Library help”, “Library guides”, and “Library research & information literacy skills.” To gain a better understanding of these skills. Step 2: Ask friends and family members for topics they’d like to learn more about so that I can practice researching and citing reliable sources. Step 3: Enroll in TESU: Information literacy course on edX to gain additional knowledge about information literacy. Describe an action plan around developing your skill that includes things you can do now to begin working towards your goal. What specific actions are needed to acquire knowledge and build upon your skill? Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: (Add more if necessary.) 9

PHI1200 Potential Obstacles/Challenges Finding time to go through all the resources is going to be difficult. I’m going to have to figure out where to schedule this time in. Learning new technology can be confusing and frustrating. Figuring out how to use different types of search engines and all the tools they come with is going to take some trial and error. I get frustrated easily when I can’t figure things out, so I’m going to have to remind myself how important this skill is to develop. What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate? Key Supporters Supporter 1. My husband will be able to give me topics to research and will be able to check my sources and citations for accuracy since he already has strong information literacy skills. He will also be able to help me find time for getting through necessary educational resources by assisting with our children, and household tasks. Supporter 2. My grandparents can help give me topics to research to practice my information literacy skills. My grandpa being a college graduate makes him a great candidate for checking my sources and citations. Identify 1–2 individuals that you can check in with, who will provide feedback along the way, and act as trusted supporters. Explain how these supporters will help you meet your goal. Supporter 1. Supporter 2. 10
PHI1200 Supporting University Resources The Capella Library research and information literacy skills resource is going to be the most beneficial in improving my information literacy skills, especially the “Get critical search skills” , and “ Scholarly research cycle” sections. These resources will help me learn information critical to information literacy. Capella reading strategies – Capella provides an assessment to evaluate areas where a person might struggle when reading information. This assessment told me that I may struggle with retention, and suggested I view Capella resources that teach retention and note taking strategies. I never annotate or take notes on what I’m reading so this could be valuable to retaining information during research. Identify 1–2 university resources that can help you meet your goal and explain how. Consider the resources you learned about in the course including, Career Center resources: Capella Connect. Career Exploration & Planning video series. Resume Builder. Writing Center. Center for Academic Success and Excellence. 11
PHI1200 Benefits From Change/Connections to Personal, Academic, and Career Goals My personal goal is to homeschool my son effectively. Two of my children have autism spectrum disorder. One of them is school- aged, and this disorder causes him to struggle in many ways with school. He’s very intelligent when he’s actually able to do work. He scored the highest score available on his STAR tests 3 years in a row and has always been a straight A student. To get him to sit long enough to complete work without melting down though, requires extensive problem- solving. I struggle to find specific research without knowing advanced search techniques. If I had stronger information literacy skills, I would be able to do better research on his disorder, and I would be able to use this information to develop more effective solutions. I would also be able to research and understand ways to help my younger son, which could help our household function better. I am studying psychology which makes information literacy an important area to grow in. I tend to avoid quoting specific research unless it’s necessary because APA citations are confusing to me. If I improve my information literacy skills, I will feel more confident when doing assignments that require APA formatted citations. I would be able to include the relevant information that I currently avoid including. Being able to turn in properly formatted assignments would ensure that I score high grades, helping me to achieve my educational goal of completing a bachelor’s degree program. My professional goal is to become a licensed counselor. It is inevitable that I will have patients that have disorders or symptoms that I will need to research and learn more about. Improving my information literacy skills will help me to find solutions to their problems more competently. I will also be able to easily locate reliable resources for them to use. I will rely heavily on my online platforms to gain Connect your goals around skills to three other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals? 12

PHI1200 Target Skill 3 Specify the skill you are developing (such as communication, technology, or productivity): I need to develop better relationship building skills. Strengths: Describe your strengths in this skill. I’m very empathetic. Whenever I have a co-worker that’s volatile or combative, I try to understand what’s driving them to behave that way. I try to understand their feelings or personal situations, and I always help in whatever ways that I’m able to. Empathy helps me to keep relationships positive, and people know that they can open up to me about any struggles that are affecting their work. I’m an active listener. I make sure people feel heard and understood, by giving cues that I’m engaged in the conversation, and by paraphrasing what they said to me to ensure I heard everything correctly. I try to respond carefully instead of reactively, and I maintain a calm demeanor throughout conversations. I practice mindfulness so that I can be present and positive when engaging with others. Mindfulness helps me to stay in control of my emotions and stress levels when dealing with conflict at work. Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement in this skill. I struggle with setting boundaries. This leads to frequently being taken advantage of in both my professional and personal life. I tend to avoid building new relationships out of fear that I’ll end up losing money and time when trying to maintain the relationships. For example, when I see a co-worker is busy, I might take on extra tasks to help them, which leads to them expecting me to then do their tasks every day. At my previous job I bought breakfast for a co- worker, which led to them routinely asking me to buy them food, which led to them asking me for financial loans that they never paid back. I don’t know enough about networking. I know that networking is important for building relationships, but I have no idea where to start or how to do it. I don’t like crowds or large social events and need to learn more about how to properly build a professional network. I don’t go out of my way to build relationships. I do my best to resolve conflict and to maintain a positive, professional, demeanor, but I don’t actively seek relationships. Unless a situation is escalating or an issue arises, I tend to stay to myself. This prevents me from building meaningful relationships. 13
PHI1200 Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this skill during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this skill looks like. I would like to build stronger relationship building skills. I will need to learn how to set boundaries, build networks, and to become more social so that I can build more beneficial professional and personal relationships. Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development. I will develop stronger social and relationship building skills so that I’m able to maintain positive professional and personal relationships with appropriate boundaries. Practices for Growth I can find resources to help me learn more about networking, setting boundaries, and being more actively social. This will allow me to learn effective ways to build and maintain relationships. I can attend networking events to grow my professional network. Going to networking events will help me practice building meaningful relationships by exposing me to more people who have a common goal, and by giving me the opportunity to meet new people. I can use self-reflection to figure out which mental and emotional hurdles are hampering my ability to set boundaries, and to build beneficial relationships. If I can identify the core causes of these issues, I can develop a plan to overcome them. Describe 2–3 specific strategies that can be used to develop this skill. 14
PHI1200 Action Steps Step 1: Read Networking for Introverts By: Daisy Myers, and Boundaries By: Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend to gain a better understanding of how to network and set boundaries. Step 2: Attend the mental health resources day conference on January 13 th . This is a local event that will allow me to meet people within my professional field of interest, so that I can practice my networking skills, and overall relationship building skills. Step 3: Set aside time to reflect on what may be causing my inability to set boundaries, and to actively seek relationships, so that I can figure out what’s holding me back in these areas, Step 4: After identifying the causes behind my relationship building weaknesses I will develop a plan to overcome those obstacles. Describe an action plan around developing your skill that includes things you can do now to begin working towards your goal. What specific actions are needed to acquire knowledge and build upon your skill? Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: (Add more if necessary.) Potential Obstacles/Challenges I will need to find childcare and will have to manage schedule conflicts to make sure I can attend networking events. I don’t like crowds or large social events. I tend to become overwhelmed and overstimulated. I will need to find solutions for this prior to attending any events. I recently ordered Loop earplugs which filter out certain decibels of sound. I anticipate that these will help with overstimulation. I struggle with time-management and will need to stay focused on the importance of relationship building so that I can set aside time to read the books that will help me grow in this area. What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate? 15

PHI1200 Key Supporters Supporter 1. My friend and ex-coworker Ariona will help me by attending networking events with me for social support. I will let her know relevant dates, and she will follow-up to make sure I actually go to the events instead of ditching them at the last minute. Supporter 2. My husband will help me with child-care and will make sure I’m staying on track and reading the necessary resources to strengthen my relationship building skills. Identify 1–2 individuals that you can check in with, who will provide feedback along the way, and act as trusted supporters. Explain how these supporters will help you meet your goal. Supporter 1. Supporter 2. PHI1200 Benefits From Change/Connections to Personal, Academic, and Career Goals My goal is to homeschool my son more effectively. Strengthening my relationship building skills would help me to do this. The social aspect of homeschooling is important. There are many local homeschool groups that hold various events and meet-ups, which I have avoided for the time being. If I learn how to set boundaries, and how to overcome some of my weaknesses, I would be more confident attending these events, which would have major benefits for my son. If I could build strong relationships with other homeschooling parents, it would open up more resources and opportunities, I want to be able to finish my bachelor’s degree without falling behind or losing financial aid. Being neurodivergent causes me to struggle significantly academically. I noticed that Campus communities has a neurodivergent community. Growing my relationship building skills would allow me to connect with other neurodivergent students, and to create lasting relationships where I can learn from others who have similar struggles. Learning about the solutions others have found will help me develop more strategies for making sure I’m on track academically. My professional goal is to become a licensed counselor. I will need to build relationships with clients, and to build a strong professional network for resources, references, and insight. I will also need to develop strong professional boundaries when working with clients. Growing in this area will make me an overall better counselor. Connect your goals around skills to three other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals? 17
