Reflecting on Your Skills, Goals, and Accomplishments
Review the description of the outcomes discussed in Week 1 and complete each section of the template below, following the assignment instructions.
Part 1: About Me
Answer the following questions to capture how you see yourself, in terms of values, aspirations, key qualities, goals, strength areas, and areas of growth:
1.
Find a quote or saying that captures your values, motivations, and aspirations and share
it here. a.
“If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be” – Maya Angelou
2.
Describe some of your main personal, academic, and professional goals.
a.
Personal goals – To work on my time management when it comes to working out and taking time for myself separate from my husband and kids.
b.
Academic goals – To finish my bachelor’s degree and begin working toward attaining my master’s degree.
c.
Professional goals – To move up in the company I’m currently employed with if there’s a position available. If not, then gain employment with a company that aligns with my growth and goals.
3.
State some of your areas of strength. Think about the top 2 – 3 abilities you would advertise about yourself, or consider what others come to you for advice about. These can be the outcomes in the course, or other skills and abilities you know to be areas of strength.
a.
Some of my top areas of strength include my ability to multi-task, my ability to adapt to change, and my level of empathy. Because my current positions requires me to work on more than one thing at a time, my ability to multi-task comes in handy. We are constantly
looking at methods to improve the workflow within the organization so change happens frequently. With the 12-14 different personalities that I interact with daily, I have to constantly listen and be empathetic to situations that arise in their daily activities. 4.
Include some areas you would like to grow and improve in.
a.
The main two areas I’d like to grow and improve in are my ability to handle constructive criticism and my time management. I have a tendency to want to work on multiple things at a time and that can cause other projects to fall behind. 5.
How can these areas help you solve problems and develop a solution-oriented mindset?
a.
These are areas of importance when it comes to problem solving in that managing time better will allow me to view the problem in its entirety and get to the root of what cause it and develop a solution. By working on handling criticism better, it will allow me to grow as a person and handle problems more effectively when they arise.

Part 2: Accomplishment Statements
Accomplishments don’t have to be as large as climbing the top of Mount Everest or starting your
own company. We accomplish many things in our lives every day that have meaning. For example, perhaps, you organized volunteers for your school’s food drive, or made an extremely profitable sale. Or, if you’re more advanced in your career, perhaps you’ve received a promotion
or special recognition.
In this part of the assignment, you’ll identify two accomplishments from work, school, volunteer, or other activities. You’ll then practice communicating these in ways appropriate for a CV or resume.
To begin, review the list of Accomplishment Categories at the end of this template and brainstorm accomplishments from your work, school, volunteer or other activities. After you’ve identified two accomplishments, write their story using the information below:
1.
Think about each of your accomplishments in these terms
:
Challenge
Situation, problem, or requirement.
Action
Specific actions you took to resolve or meet the challenge.
Result
The benefit created in specific and measurable terms. Be sure to tie results to organization’s goals when possible.
Details
Clarifying details, such as numbers or percentages to provide context (consider answering how many, how much, how long, or how often
).
Details
Previously, customer complaints averaged four per week. After 3 months, complaints averaged one per week or less.
2.
Write two stories to practice using this format (type into the boxes below):
Challenge
An administrative assistant launched a complaint against a representative after a company outing.
Action
I did a thorough investigation of the incident by speaking with both parties and witnesses.
Result
The organization prides itself on providing a safe environment for the

employees and the suppliers we represent. The sales representative accused of harassment was terminated once the investigation was complete. I then had each sales representative go through an online training exercise on sexual harassment. When they completed the training, they had to send the acknowledgement of understanding to me for their personnel files. Details
The investigation into the incident took about two weeks. We took down four witness statements and that went into account when it came time to make a final decision.
Challenge
We received a complaint from one of our regular account holders that a representative hadn’t been to their store in about six months.
Action
The account representative that handled the account had submitted his resignation and we didn’t assign a new representative to the account. We reviewed the sales representatives routes to determine who could best serve that account. In the meantime, the district manager visited the account to assess what their immediate needs were.
Result
After the visit from the district manager, the manager of the store was satisfied with our prompt attention to handling his complaint and is now one of our most valuable accounts.
Details
Our organization previously received complaints regarding lack of attention about once or twice a month. At the beginning of 2021, I initiated
a plan to revamp the accounts assigned to our sales representatives so that they were more manageable. The complaints decreased to three or four times a year.

3.
Now, try converting your two accomplishment stories into a clear and concise format for a resume or CV, as shown in the two examples below (type into the boxes for Accomplishment 1 and 2):
Formula 1:
Result + action + brief description including clarifying details.
Example: Decreased customer complaints from three per week to one per week or less by training
staff and implementing a regular review process.
Formula 2: Action + brief description with clarifying details + results.
Example: Trained retail staff in customer-service techniques and implemented a regular review process, decreasing customer complaints from three per week to one per week or less.
Accomplishment 1 Story
Implemented a sensitivity training exercise for the sales representatives to continue to promote the positive and safe environment for the employees that the organization was best known for.
Accomplishment 2 Story
Created a plan to revamp the accounts that the sales representatives managed to make their workload more manageable and time efficient.
Part 3: Reflect on Your Experiences
1)
How has reflecting on your goals, strengths, areas of growth, and accomplishments been valuable for you?
Reflecting on my goals, strengths, areas of growth, and accomplishments has helped me refocus my attention. The day-to-day routine hasn’t allowed me to take a moment and review areas where I can grow and areas where I have succeeded. 2)
What are ways you can build in a regular practice of reflection?
4
PHI1200
Some ways that I can build a regular practice of reflection are by reviewing this assessment and remembering why I started this process of attaining my degree. I can also get back to journaling my goals on a regular and making lists of things to accomplish for the day.
3)
Briefly explain how problem solving helped you reach the accomplishments listed in Part
2.
When it came to addressing the issue in part 2, I had to first identify the problem. Next, I looked at what caused the problem, which was due to the previous representative resigning, and we didn’t assign another representative to that location. After addressing that issue, I immediately worked on resolving it and implementing a plan of action to ensure this didn’t happen in the future. 4)
After practicing writing your accomplishments in a CV or resume-appropriate style, do you feel more confident in expressing your accomplishments to an employer? Briefly explain.
After completing the previous activity of writing my accomplishments in a CV or resume style, I do feel more confident in expressing this to an employer. By putting it in this particular format, I was able to provide a brief and professional summary of what my accomplishments.
