1.
What is the main message that Katz is delivering in this video?
2.
Pay critical attention to the role of the speaker—What does it mean to have a White, heterosexual male delivering this simple message? 3.
What dominant idea is he fighting against? Jackson Katz TED Talk on Violence against women- it’s a men’s issue
discusses the facts that oftentimes women are questioned for the abuse they are receiving at the hands of men.
He wants men to start taking responsibility for their actions. The main message that Katz is speaking on is how violence against both women and children is a men’s issue. Although men may be part of the problem, they can also be a bigger part in the solution of ending violence for the greater good of society. When addressing “women’s issues” men may feel as if they do not need to listen to what the issues are about. The use of language when describing a domestic assault, we often have a predetermined way of assuming how the issue went, solely based on how we describe the issue. We often blame the victim as to why
things happen Katz states, “one of the reasons we have victim blaming is based on our cognitive structures are set up to ask questions to women and their choices.” We need to start asking questions about the abuser and why he is abusing women, children. Narrowing
our questions on why men do what they do and why society has these issues are the questions we need to focus on. “We need more men who have the courage to stand up and stay some of the stuff that women are not allowed to be saying,” Katz states. Although Katz © University of Waterloo
is a white, male, heterosexual speaker he gives the credit to the women who have not gotten the credit that many people give to him. He addresses the fact that it is easier for him to receive the credit then the many women who have fought so hard to get a change that so many are deserving of. He stated, “one of the ways that we can use our spotlight is to thank women and honor women’s leadership going forward today tomorrow and into the future.” Although this is the case, Katz uses his position to instigate change and get other men to use their power to help fight for change and get men to start taking charge of their actions. Along with taking charge of their action’s men need to start using their power
to start driving change into society. Ultimately Katz is fighting for change where we all can work together where men take account their actions, where men stand up to help fight against “women’s issues”, where we put an end to abuse, rape, assault etc. Katz is fighting against many social justice issues that should not be so prevalent in our societies today. Katz wants to see men end their silence to raise the up-and-coming generations of young men to end women’s violence. To end the stigma of abuse that so many are faced with. All in all, Katz TED talk discusses ideas that are prevalent in our societies, and many things that need to change to protect men, women, and children. (500 words)
