To start this class and ensure you understand what Crisis Intervention is, provide a definition for the term "Crisis Intervention". Crisis Intervention is the aid that is given to a person who is experiencing a crisis. With crisis being defined as a scenario or situation in which a person’s coping skills fail them, causing them to feel overwhelmed, or even helpless. The interventions’ purpose would be to provide comfort and stability to the individual who is experiences a crisis. Also, it should provide resources for this individual to help them with their coping skills during this experience. 2. List each of Caplan' Seven Characteristics of Effective Coping Behavior. Caplan’s Seven Characteristics of Effective Coping Behavior are: a. Explore reality and search for information. b. Freely express feelings, whether it is negative or positive, tolerate frustration. c. Getting help from others. d. Working through your problems one at a time. e. Pace coping, being aware of fatigue or tiredness, function where possible. f. Be willing to change and be flexible. g. Trust in yourself and others. Be optimistic. 3. How does stress differ from being in a state of crisis? Although stress is different than being in a state of crisis, perception is the key to both of these events. With stress the individual can cope or handle the situation and they are able to function. Whereas in the event of a crisis the person is left feeling overwhelmed and helpless. Although both events cause the person to have negative emotions, the ability to handle the event or situation is what differentiate the difference between stress and crisis.
4. Why is there a need for ethics in the field of crisis intervention? The need for ethics in the field of crisis intervention is due to state that the client experiencing a crisis is in, to protect the individual from being taken advantage of. Ethical need is to help the clients see them as someone who is there to help them and not take advantage of the client. Someone experiencing a crisis present themselves frail and hopeless, it would be easy to take advantage of someone in this state. Basically, to avoid any further emotional harm to the individual. 5. Provide an example of a time when a provider can break confidentiality with someone they are treating. An example of a time when a provider can break confidentiality is if the client is trying to endanger themselves due to a mental disorder. This includes someone who is considered suicidal or are disabled to the point that they cannot take care of themselves. Breaking this confidentiality is to protect the client from further harm.
