Mr. Brown & Peers,
For this week’s discussion we have been asked what we consider a non-negotiable rule. We are
also asked to identify three (3) of our future non-negotiable rules and explain why we chose them,what is the difference between non-negotiable rules and classroom values, and how these
are essential to the classroom. To begin, what I consider to be non-negotiable rules are just basic expectations that all students should know before entering the classroom. With lower grades such as pre-k, these students would have to be introduced to the rules and as they progress these rules will continue to be enforced or repeated. Examples of three (3) of my future/ current non-negotiable rules are:

Be Kind
- We all never know what each of our students go home to once they leave our classroom. It is equally important for students to be kind to themselves and others at all times. This is a great way for students to understand differences.

Be Accountable
- Being accountable for their own learning! It is imperative that students have an understanding that negative behaviors will result in consequences. For
instance, you are teaching students how to use data from a chart to create a picture graph, however, one student is highly unfocused by playing on his desk. You speak to the student once to redirect them and afterwards ignore the behavior (this assists with you as the teacher not taking the learning from other students). ●
Be Safe
- Safe is a requirement NOT just a rule! It should be enforced at all times and students should be reminded when unsafe behavior occurs. Safe practices are everything.
The true difference between non-negotiable is that they are expectations that cannot be altered.
In other words, they are a requirement and cannot be changed and/or are highly enforced. On the other hand, classroom values are similar to basic principles and/or interactions within the classroom environment.They both are essential to one's classroom as they contribute to your classroom community (building/ maintaining).
