W08 Assignment: Reflection and Insight
Assignment Instructions
1.
Write at least two short paragraphs (200 words minimum) describing the most insightful/uplifting truths you found during your study this week. You could also include: personal application you will be making because of something you found this week, questions for your instructor, share a brief experience you had this week because of something you read, etc. (19 points)
In my readings this week, I found a lot of valuable principles from the chapters especially in the book of Matthew. In Matthew chapter 19, I found it to address issues with self-discipline, marriage, and providing guidance for fellow disciples of Christ. In this chapter, the Pharisees test Jesus on his understanding of Mosaic law on divorce at the beginning of the chapter. Jesus replies, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Matthew 19:6), reaffirming the sanctity of marriage. This concept emphasizes the sanctity of the marital union as established by God and the divine institution of marriage. Jesus then emphasizes the importance of marriage covenant and the necessity of integrity and commitment within the marital partnership by teaching that divorce is only authorized in circumstances of sexual immorality. He declares that anyone who divorces their spouse and remarries is guilty of adultery, cautioning against thoughtless views on divorce and remarriage.
In John chapter 11, a principle that I noticed and struck out to me was the importance of faith and how having faith can lead us to exaltation. This chapter begins with the news that Lazarus, Martha's and Mary's brother, is ill. Mary and Martha write to Jesus, expressing their love and faith in him, requesting that he come heal their brother. But because Jesus is running late, when he finally makes it to Bethany, Lazarus has already passed away and has been in the tomb for four days.
Martha says to Jesus, "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died," expressing her faith in him. However, I am aware that, even at this moment, God will grant whatever request you make of Him (John 11:21–22). After giving Martha, the assurance that her brother will rise again, Jesus raises Lazarus from the grave and gives him the command to emerge from the tomb. Overall, John chapter 11 emphasizes the idea that trusting
in Jesus Christ is the source of new life and resurrection. BYU-Idaho
