Business Ethics Position Paper NAME Purdue University Global HU245M2: Business Ethics Jerett Vincent Oct 26, 2021 At a local restaurant a prominent politician has arrived and has been seated for dinner. Several of the serving staff are upset because they disagree with the politician’s political views. Some are requesting the manager on duty speak to the politician and ask him/or to leave. Explain what the manager should do in this situation and how they could resolve the conflict between the servers and the politician in the most ethical manner.
By definition, business ethics refers to the standards for morally right and wrong conduct in business. Law partially defines the conduct, but “legal” and “ethical” aren’t necessarily the same. Business ethics enhances the law by outlining acceptable behaviors beyond government control (Schroeder, 2019) . It is important for all small and large businesses to have an ethics program. In our case, if someone takes a seat it is not ethical to have them to leave only because we do not like the person’s job or views. We are all humans, and we all have the same human rights regardless of our job, political or religious views, our color or gender and so on. We are all equal. If I was the owner of the restaurant, I would not take things personally as it would affect my business and therefore my income. When a server starts a job at a restaurant, they know that they should not take things personally either. Ethical lapses occur in the workplace from time to time, but we should try to be in control of our emotions and thoughts. If someone would sit in my restaurant, and the servers are against serving due to their political views, I would advise the server that the political views aside, the person sitting in the table waiting to be served a dinner, is a human being after all. We should not discriminate due to the person being a politician. If the server still refuses, I will serve myself and make sure the person seated is as comfortable as possible and I would clarify with the server that this kind of behavior breaks an ethical code at work. First of all, nothing should be taken personally as it is unprofessional, and we should not discriminate people because of their job. They have a job to earn an income just like everybody else. Their political views are their own and we should not interfere with it. We should respect other’s ideas and views. Works Cited
