Identify an event from the timeline in the intro to Topic Two multimedia, addressing how it aligns with or influences your personal philosophy. At its essence, the counseling profession can be summed up as "about helping" or improving the standard of living in society (Sangganjanavanich, V. F., & Reynolds, C, 2013, p. 25). Being the oldest of seven children comes with a great deal of responsibility and pressure to take charge. It goes without saying that I found this role challenging. I was able to develop a deeper understanding of the role that my environment and my own family's mental health difficulties played by going through growing pains and seeking my own counseling. Through that experience, I hope to be able to lend a helping hand to others. To be able to pass on information and techniques that will allow us to be our best selves for ourselves, our children, and society. My own personal growth and experience influenced my decision to enter the counseling industry, and the ACA Code of Ethics has established the tone for the ethical behavior and responsibility that is expected of me in the counseling field (ACA Governing Council, 2014).
Patience, empathy, trustworthiness, being a good listener, and optimism are some personal qualities that will help me in the counseling profession. These have all been developed over the course of my life from both home and work experiences. These attributes, I believe, will
help me establish a working relationship with clients, build trust, work through difficulties with clients at their pace, and be able to relate to some challenges. The postwar economic depression 1
and Congress' establishment of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) accord with my personal perspective (Sangganjanavanich, V. F., & Reynolds, C, 2013). According to Sangganjanavanich et. el. (2013), the overall objective of NIM was to transform the knowledge and treatment of mental illness through basic and clinical research to aid in prevention, recovery,
and cures. Clinical research funding to further the discovery of the growing science of the brain, behavior, and experience these breakthroughs can lend that helpful hand to all people with mental illness.
