Initially, I found it challenging to make this choice because of my prejudices and past experiences. Cyberbullying, inappropriate conduct, and inadequate internet security were among the concerns I had. During the decision-making process, I considered whether or not I trusted my teenager to use social media, if he was mature enough to handle responsibility, and how he would act in social situations and in his own personal portrayals. Social media was becoming more popular on websites like Facebook and MySpace while I was a teenager. I used to share everything about my personal life, which eventually with age and
maturity, I learned that is not the smartest thing to do. There was a conflict-of-interest prejudice in this case because of my experiences. My teenage son trusts me, and he also trust me to look out for his best interests, while still having a level of trust in him. I may give the impression that I don't trust them if I strictly regulated his use of social media or kept a close eye on it. I used the Rights Framework as the ethical framework from the Module Guide. The moral ideals that drive this framework are that everyone has a right to autonomy, privacy, and the truth. When considering whether to keep an eye on my son's social media use, I had to consider this. There could have been a serious effect on our relationship if I didn't offer him the freedom to choose for himself and respect his independence a young adult or even as individual. The main ethical issue in this case was that my adolescent son's right to privacy was being challenged. In this case, the most important ethical principles to keep in mind were accountability, responsibility, respect, and reliability. Using an ethical framework and learning about it has helped me identify biases I didn't know I had. I liked learning about the various frameworks and seeing how I could use them in my day-to-day activities. It gives me greater confidence that I will be able to make wiser choices for myself and how I connect with other people. Unlike how I usually approached an ethical dilemma, using an ethical framework allowed me to carefully analyze all of the possibilities I came up with and then decide which was best for me. Generally speaking, my sense of what is correct based on my own experiences would guide my decisions. I think the knowledge I get from this course will be very helpful to me.
