Case Study:
You manage a seniors residence. Mrs. Saki just moved in. She has a strong
attachment to and pride in her ethnic roots. She especially likes to cook traditional
foods. Mrs. Wyatt, Mrs. Saki's next-door neighbor, has just come in to complain about
the weird smelling food Mrs. Saki cooks. She says it smells up the hallway and makes
the place seem like a tenement house. She wants you to do something about this right
away." What do you do?
Write 2-4 paragraphs explaining how you would address this situation. Be sure to use
APA format and APA citation, if appropriate.
In this scenario, there are a few implications regarding someone’s ethnic practices versus
how her neighbor, who most likely does not have any ethnic practices, views the smells emitted
from Mrs. Saki’s food. The main implication in this scenario is coming up with a solution that
will amicably resolve this situation, while also respecting the integrity of Mrs. Saki’s cultural
identity. Elder minorities, especially in past studies, have been found to receive worse treatment
compared to their white counterparts. That is why it is important to treat everyone as equal as
possible when handling a situation like this. There are a few solutions that come to mind when I
think about this scenario.
Options to Consider
One, move either Mrs. Wyatt or Mrs. Saki away from one another. This could prove
challenging to do because these residents might not be physically or mentally capable of
handling being moved to another room or might now want to be moved. Two, ask Mrs. Saki to
quit cooking her ethnic food that is “stinking up” the residence facility. This is not fair to Mrs.
Saki, and gives the opinion that the institution is not respectful of other cultures. The third option
is to have Mrs. Saki cook her food in an environment that has decent ventilation (e.g a
community kitchen), so that smell can be contained to that room. The fourth options is to have
specific intervals in which Mrs. Saki cooks her food when Mrs. Wyatt is not around and vice
versa.
My Personal Choice
The best option in my opinion is to have Mrs. Saki cooks outside of her room in another
room with ventilation. It is not specifically stated in the case study that Mrs. Saki cooks in her
room, but for the purposes of this explanation, I am going to assume that she cooks in there. By
allowing Mrs. Saki to cook in a community kitchen, the institution is still respecting her cultural
practices, while appeasing Mrs. Wyatt and her complaints. If Mrs. Saki cooks in her room
because she is not very mobile or prefers isolation, she should be able to have some
accommodations made to support her and make her feel as comfortable as possible.
