Good morning, everyone,
This week, I have chosen to discuss option number two, more specifically, Diagramming Arguments. During this week's coursework, diagramming arguments can be used to show the visual relationship between the information and the conclusion. It is used to reinforce the words we speak by giving a visual picture of the critical details of the argument (APUS, n.d.). This can be used to help others to understand your argument’s stance and structure. Another reason this skill is helpful is to strengthen your organization of the argument points, and it also serves to help when presenting these points to others (Lumen Learning, n.d.).
Through my research, diagramming arguments would be valuable in arguments I know little about. If I do not know much about the subject, I tend
not to listen or space out, because I’m not knowledgeable, so having a diagram on the subject, would help me follow the information being discussed. This can also be a helpful tool for individuals who aren’t as knowledgeable on a topic to help them understand why you did what you did. I'll give you an example to clarify that last statement. A few years ago, I ran a mass causality car accident where we had seven patients needing to be transported to a hospital, whether it was by helicopter
or ambulance. At the time of the call, we had one ambulance available to stay on the scene once they arrived to be commanded over the medical side of the accident in the unified command system that was used. My first patient was the most critical and needed to be transported first, and I needed to ensure that this happened (my conclusion). I did my patient assessment and gathered the injuries I could feel and saw they sustained after being thrown from the vehicle and presenting it to the paramedic on scene. Obviously, I didn’t pull out a diagram on scene, but I broke down each
piece of vital information as quickly as possible. The patient was the first one
to leave the scene. Unfortunately, that patient did not make it, and I had to testify in court. In a way, my report of what I did on the scene was used as a sort of diagram for what happened. This helped the jury see what was down on the scene and why I did what I did throughout the patient contact. -Pruitt
