Main Post:  Jack D. Cohen Situation #3 : Larry Adams has a PhD in history and is a university professor. He also has a master's degree in counseling and is an LPC. He plans to open a parttime private practice and has business cards printed that read, "Dr. Larry Adams, Individual and Group Counseling" (Erford, 2018). Unethical:  An unethical behavior is exhibited by Larry Adams. According to the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics, counselors are required to be accurate in their advertising and to refrain from using any credentials that are not pertinent to their qualifications (American Counseling Association, 2014). In this particular instance, Larry Adams is engaging in this unethical and misleading practice of promoting his counseling services by utilizing his doctorate in history. It would be appropriate for him to just use the credentials that are pertinent and relevant to his counseling qualifications. Situation #9 : A professional counselor has been working with a married couple. The spouses decide to divorce. Between sessions, the couple has an argument, and the husband moves out of the house. The wife obtains a restraining order because she fears her husband will harm her or their children, as he has in the past. The husband calls the counselor and threatens to bomb the house if his wife does not allow him to see their children. The husband sounds rational but definitely wants to get even with his wife. The counselor believes the husband is just spouting off, so does not contact or warn the wife or the authorities (Erford, 2018). Unethical:  The counselor's actions are dishonest and unethical. The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA) emphasizes that counselors have a responsibility to safeguard their clients from danger and to report any threats of harm to the appropriate authorities (American Counseling Association, 2014). When it comes to this particular scenario, the husband's threat to bomb the house constitutes a significant risk of injury to the wife and children. For the sake of the family's protection, the counselor needs to have been in contact with the authorities as soon as possible. Situation #19 : Joe, a 23-year-old college student, was convicted of illegal possession of a controlled substance and is now serving a two-year probation sentence. He is seeing a college counselor. Joe's probation officer contacts the counselor and requests a report. Although Joe has not signed a release of information, the counselor complies, fearing that not doing so might cause the probation officer to file a negative report on Joe with the court (Erford, 2018). Unethical:  The counselor's behavior is dishonest and unethical. In accordance with the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics, counselors are required to get written authorization from their clients before disclosing any information about them (American Counseling Association, 2014). It is not appropriate for the counselor to have disclosed any information to the probation officer in this scenario because Joe has not signed a release of information. Even though the counselor is concerned about the potential adverse effects on Joe, this does not warrant breaking his confidence. Reference : American Counseling Association. (2014).
