University Of the People PHIL 1402-01 Learning Journal Unit 2 Michele Williams Instructor: Stephen Ababio Date: 2/11/2024
This has been a busy but exciting week of peer discussions on metaphysical thinking! Hopefully, you know now what men and women have been discussing for eons; we are all philosophers; we all have valid opinions and judgments about the world around us. For this week’s journal, please share with me what the most interesting part (lesson/discussion) this week was. How did that experience change your worldview? Please explain how you thought before, and how the new viewpoint changed that old thinking into something new. Looking for meaning was the most fascinating aspect of the conversation that piqued my interest. The example of Charles Simic's perseverance in the face of adversity motivated me. Life has meaning and purposes that are sometimes determined by how we handle certain circumstances rather than by the circumstances themselves. The way we see the world shapes our perception of it, and we can choose our mindset. According to the writer Viktor Frankl ", everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances." Viktor Frankl Institute of Logo therapy. (n.d.). I was inspired by Simic's life precisely for this reason. The limitations of life had no power over him. He gained notoriety for being one of the most emotive and unique authors writing today after experiencing the displacement of the Second
World War in Yugoslavia. He inspired and motivated me to think that I can overcome any obstacle with the help of his life. The poetry foundation presents Peter Stitt as saying that "the world of Simic's poems is frightening, mysterious, hostile, and dangerous, but he tempers this perception of horror with gallows humor and an ironic self-awareness:" Stitt emphasizes that even the most somber poems "display a liveliness of style and creative thinking that seems to re-create, before our eyes, the possibility of light upon the earth." Maybe putting it this way would be more accurate: Simic uses the sanctifying light of art to counterbalance the blackness of political structures. Poetry Foundation. (n.d.). I got inspired by this idea: if we are focused, determined, and don't let life's circumstances hold us back, we can overcome any challenge. Philosophy was not something I had much experience with, so I wasn't sure if I would find it fascinating. However, I am enjoying the experience so far, and I think that if I am persistent and determined, I will succeed. If we can look past the material world, life has purpose. Because it enables us to better understand reality and develop relationships with objects, I believe that metaphysics is crucial. There were things I used to believe required too much effort to accomplish. I was able to view life differently, though, because of Simic's life. As a result, my outlook on life has improved. I felt like it gave me even more drive. If I don't give up easily on my goals and dreams in life, I will eventually find meaning and purpose.
