RE: Gun Violence in the Community, Senate Bill 2079
Dear Senator Smith
My name is LaShonda Gordon, and I am a social worker advocating for my community who resides in your district. Violence against people, such as murder, drive-by shootings, and school shootings, has an effect on a lot of people every day. I urge you to monitor how the guns sold in our community are distributed. Our society members chastise their people for the violence while doing little to stop it.
Less than 1% of the population is linked to the great majority of gunshot occurrences in numerous areas, according to a 2018 report by the National Network for Safe Communities. Mississippi does not have legislation mandatory for gun sellers to perform background checks before selling a weapon. The issue with this policy is that it allows anyone age 18 and older to purchase as many guns as they want without background checks. Gun control should be strict and enforced better, along with gun locks and proper gun storage.
There are not many restrictions on the distribution of guns. As a community, we must promote sensible gun laws that forbid the purchase, transfer, and possession of firearms by individuals who do not adhere to the standards set by the federal government, state agencies, and its regulations. As a result, the cycles of poverty, economic disadvantage, and health disparity already present in many areas are made worse by community violence.
The organization I represent considers itself to have the moral authority to warn other nations about the adverse effects of gun restrictions and the harm that these policies have caused to humanity. I urge you to enforce strict gun laws by requiring background checks for all gun sales. Gun enforcement and more stringent gun laws are needed to reduce gun violence. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
LaShonda Gordon

Gun regulation is a frequently discussed political subject concerning violence in today’s society. Mississippi does not have a legislation mandating gun sellers to perform background checks before selling a weapon (Gifford Law Center, 2023). Mississippi has one of the highest gun death rates in the country and poor gun legislation. My first argument is that background checks should be done before purchasing a gun. The second argument is that gun control should be stricter and enforced better. The third argument is the need for gun locks and proper gun storage.
We have no control over how marketed guns are perceived, and violence is currently on the rise in our nation. Less than 1% of the population is linked to the great majority of gunshot occurrences in numerous areas, according to a 2018 report by the National Network for Safe Communities (Gifford Law Center, 2023). There are not many restrictions on the distribution of guns. The National Instant Background Check System (NICS) database does not have Mississippi listed as one of its points of contact states. Recent gun violence among young people has shocked, if not terrified, our country. Our communities are demanding immediate and significant reform to American laws. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law, making New York one of the most difficult places to buy a gun because permits must now be renewed every five years and background checks are now required for all gun sales (Maugeri, 2022). Strict gun laws like this could prevent innocent lives from being taken by individuals or groups such as criminals or those who are mentally unstable from taking innocent lives. We need laws such as this one to enforce stricter laws when comes to purchasing a gun. A bill was passed that would allow teachers to participate in weapon training and I do agree with this law because children are now bringing guns into schools. Senator, Angela Burks Hull, R-Picayune, is the sponsor of Senate Bill 2079, which would establish a program for teachers in both public and private schools who wish to participate in weapons training and licensing (Pender, 2023). This bill would protect the teachers and the students and have the training they need to ensure their safety and the children. It will also make the parents and people in the community feel safe. However, I do not think this is the solution to our problem, but there is also a limited amount of protection within the school system. With stricter gun laws and background checks, many people
in the community would not have access to guns. The goal was to see how individuals in the neighborhood feel about weapons, the lives they protect, the lives they take, and the lives they define. To create a better and safer community, engagement and awareness are required. There is a change that can be made now.
