Discussion - Week 9 Spiritual Development According to (Zastrow, & Kirst-Ashman, 2016) Religion has been found to be important factor that promotes emotional well-being in later life. As professionals increasingly embrace multicultural competency in counseling and therapy, religion and Spirituality arguably stand out as cultural and personal factors that are a relevant part of framing one’s experiences, beliefs, values, behavior, and illness patterns (Rose, Westefeld & Ansley 2001).Spirituality is an important aspect of human diversity as it shapes major dimensions of many people lives and can provide a significant source of strength and also serve as an empowerment that needs to be address by social worker (Zastrow, & Kirst-Ashman, 2016).James Fowler (1981) developmental theory of faith, explain how people progress through his seven stages of spiritualism throughout their life cycle, therefore relating spirituality and religious faith to the pattern of relatedness to ultimacy (1996,p.21)and stating that during each faith stage an individual grows closer to a higher power and becomes more concerned about the welfare of other people. This worldview of religion and spirituality among certain clients, would determine how as a Social worker would enable me engage and implements assessment during crisis intervention. For example, according to Richards & Potts, (1995), individuals who have a healthy spiritual identity heal at faster rates and can establish healthier lifestyles, taken into consideration that a healthy spiritual identity involves feeling connected to God’s love, feeling self-worth, having meaning and purpose in life, and being better able to fulfill one’s greatest potential, this would be a better approach towards clients when interacting with both religious and non-religious client, also as a social worker, being aware of the client spiritual belief is of great importance.
As a African American Christian, my perception and concept of religion and spirituality is the belief of an existence of a supreme power that guides and direct our ways, and that supremacy is is God, this belief is base on my own cultural and environmental perceptions and it should not intervene with Clients perceptions and feeling about religion and spirituality approached. My approach would be based on personal opinion and rights of respect for individual belief and concept, and keeps it open for discussion based on the client preferences. This is important, since understanding how to best extinguish these fears about incorporating religion and spirituality into counseling, social worker must first understand their own spiritual or religious backgrounds, biases, perspectives, and beliefs, and may find it beneficial to conduct their own spiritual assessment before beginning with a client (Cornish & Wade, 2010). Once counselors have explored their own religious and spiritual facets, they may begin implementing religiosity as early as the onset of therapy during the intake session. (Tan,.1996). One beneficial strategy in applying religion and spirituality in to client counselling would be to act according to the NASW Code of Ethics, which the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and to help meet the basic human needs of all people, therefore focusing on individual well-being and their belief is of great important. According to (Barker, 1992),factor that makes spirituality more accessible to social work is found in its origins. Social work’s roots in the Christian and Jewish charity movements of the 19th century; reminds us that the bridge to spirituality and religion is part of its foundations For social work, it will not be enough to merely introduce greater and greater levels of regulation of practice or greater levels of results oriented research, but also to create an awareness.
