Social Discrimination (Racism):
The New Testament greatly emphasizes the principles of equality, love, and respect for all individuals. It teaches that every person is created in the image of God and possesses characteristic attributes such as dignity and worth. This understanding can be applied to combat social discrimination, including racism, by making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and respected. In other words, inclusivity, and challenging prejudiced beliefs. In his document "Evangelii Gaudium," Pope Francis addresses the pervasive social issue of racism. He urges Christians to reject the evil of racism and work towards building a society where diversity is cherished and celebrated. According to Pope Francis, Christians should be actively involved in creating spaces of encounter and dialogue, creating a culture of encounter that brings together racial divisions and promotes support among one another. The New Testament states this through
various passages, such as Galatians 3:28, which states, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor
free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This passage highlights the transcendent unity found in Christ and encourages believers to rise above racial barriers.
Income Inequality:
The New Testament emphasizes the importance of caring for the poor, promoting generosity, and
the sharing of resources. Pope Francis in "Evangelii Gaudium" calls for a more equal distribution
of income and wealth, highlighting the harmful consequences of an economic system that continues to create inequality when it should be stopped. He emphasizes the need for economic policies that prioritize the needs of those who are vulnerable and marginalized, advocating for an
economy that everyone can talk and participate in and that serves the common good. The New Testament further supports this view in passages like Luke 12:33, where Jesus encourages his followers to "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near, and no moth destroys." This teaching challenges the accumulation of wealth at the expense of the poor and needy and encourages a spirit of generosity. In conclusion, the New Testament and Pope Francis' document "Evangelii Gaudium" provide valuable guidance for addressing contemporary political
and moral challenges. By promoting equality, publicly criticizing social discrimination, advocating for social justice, and encouraging generosity, Christians can actively contribute to breaking down racism and working towards a more equitable society. Their teachings inspire believers to strive for justice, solidarity, and the well-being of all individuals, irrespective of their
race or economic status.
