Assignment 1: Initial Philosophical Reflection on Candidate Learning Outcomes
Two significant ways to help foster reflective practices in my teaching are staying
open-minded and creating a routine where I can take time out and reflect. Both aspects
incorporate other ways that will aid in continually and deliberately reflecting on my practices as
an educator. Staying open-minded will allow me to embrace new approaches from recent
educational research. Maintaining an open mind can be aided by having a routine and putting
aside time for reflecting, which can involve administrators, co-workers (teachers), students, and
their families. This interdependent relationship between staying open-minded and creating a
routine will help me check my biases and become more objective instead of subjective, enabling
me to make professional decisions.
I learned while working as an educator over the years that having cultural material in the
classroom can make it feel welcoming to the students and their families. Various cultural
materials (flags, books, different languages printed out, etc.) help comfort the families that their
social factors might marginalize. Before getting materials, the teacher must take the time to get to
know the families and their backgrounds. Once receiving information about the families, create
lesson plans to welcome their values or beliefs. Lastly, I adapt my teaching practices to
accommodate the students' learning styles in the classroom.
A great way to promote and engage students in critical thinking and creativity is by
asking open-ended questions. Some people refer to open-ended questions as Socratic questioning
because it requires the responder to analyze and evaluate their thoughts or information given.
Socratic questions allow the individual to conclude on their terms. If giving real-life situations
for the individual to question, try using situations where the approach can be multifaceted;
multifaceted approaches promote creativity because it is not a right or wrong scenario.
For me to demonstrate attitudes, knowledge, skills, and professional ethics that contribute
to the success and well-being of all individuals, I must first develop an awareness and
appreciation for the diversity in cultures, beliefs, and perspectives within my space; if I am
actively learning about cultural differences and be open-minded to different ways teaching I will
be contributing to others success. Staying objective but showing verbal or nonverbal compassion
to those in my space will build trust. Having trust creates a pathway for open communication
when in need of support.
Flexibility and adaptability will be necessary when evaluating, planning, selecting, and
implementing appropriate formative and summative assessments by being open to modifying the
approach based on the students developing needs and educational technology advancements.
Utilizing both assessments by aligning them with the current curriculum, being culturally
sensitive, and using an adaptive combination approach to accommodate various learning styles.
Specialized learning applications will assist with creating and keeping a record of the student's
progress for both assessments, thus creating a digital portfolio for each child. Digital portfolios
will be utilized when reflecting on the outcomes of the assessments and making appropriate
adjustments based on feedback from students and other teachers.
