1.2 Application Assignment
Putnam's model for engaged citizenship is based on decreasing social friction among citizens. It encourages refraining from withdrawing and judging before getting to know the demographic group. Putnam's model for engaged citizenship also tells that when engaging in citizenship, you tend to move among behaviors and beliefs outside your own. Rather than allow your mind to "fill in" misinformation, creating distrust and causing social capital to
decline to practice good, engaged citizenship, implements an essential ingredient allowing a just, accessible, and prosperous society whose lubricant is social capital.
Oldenquist's argument meshes with the model presented by Putnam because Oldenquist's first three features of citizenship are based on membership in an excellent moral community, moral education, and practicing good citizenship skills. Oldenquists say that one must know their culture, history, and institutions before determining the direction of society. Just as Putnam states that he had to learn to trust other demographics that are different from his own, Oldenquist advises the same act by advising public service tasks to allow crossing paths of various social groups to enable
deeper learning to prevent a lack of mistrust of others and allowing your mind to "fill-in" unknown missing information.
My ideas of engaged citizenship stand on the value of treating others how you would like to be treated, not judging a book by its cover without all the information. I listen thoughtfully to individuals of different diversities who
may not think like me or agree with me, but I also seek common ground. Knowing some facts about the community, for example, knowing what day of
the week there is a Farmer's market to support small and local businesses, is
another idea of engaged citizenship. I agree with the basic principles of Putnam and Oldenquist because to direct, give back, and create a healthy social, economic, and political institution; one must treat others equally and learn about members within the moral community.
