Use the table below to answer the questions regarding how you can make an ethical decision for
this issue that is suitable and justifiable for your selected population. Provide at least 2-3 sentences per box.

Important definitions: a.
Professionalism & Trust: Is your decision as a public health practitioner based on transparency and honesty with any conflicts of interests or influences disclosed? b.
Health & Safety: Is your decision for based on minimizing or mitigating harm and maximizing health, well-being and safety? Explain how you accomplish this.

Select an Ethical Dilemma, Decision for this Dilemma, and Population Affected
Which public health ethical dilemma did you select?
Vaccination Mandate
What decision you think must be made regarding this
issue (i.e., for legalizing marijuana, “Marijuana use should be legal.” Or “Marijuana use should be illegal.”). Explain why you think this is the best choice.
I think Vaccination mandates should be implemented in professional settings. I think this choice is best because it adds reassurance and the environment is safer for everyone.
What is/are the public health goal(s) (i.e., reason for making decision)?
The goal is for there to be a lower chance of people spreading infections and viruses. It is still possible but with everyone having vaccinations it’s less likely for everyone to have severe symptoms.
What are population can you
identify that would be most vulnerable to the effects or this decision? Why do you think this population is most at risk?
Children would be vulnerable to the effects. Kids are around each other in schools 5 days out of the week for hours so there’s definitely a higher chance of kids catching something. Also, they are most at risk because younger children can be unsanitary and spreading things without knowing or understanding. Are there any legal concerns for this decision?
Why or why not?
No, because all 50 states in the country require children to have certain immunizations in order to enroll into public school.
What relevant ethical or legal cases can you reference
for decision making guidance? (This can be something personal you have experienced, something you have read about, or a famous court preceding like Roe vs Wade) During Covid people were against getting vaccinations for themselves and their children which became a controversial topic. People were protesting “anti-vaccination”, but I remember a couple of the same people regretting not
getting vaccinated when they got infected. The viruses effected people differently, some people had a less severe experience and many were hospitalized.
Consider Public Health Core Values & Related Obligations
Professionalism & Trust: Is your decision as a public health practitioner based on My decision is very transparent and I can show it by spreading the message on
the importance of vaccinations. Along with the pros and background info on how beneficial it can be to everyone.
transparency and honesty with any conflicts of interests or influences disclosed? Explain how you can show this.
Health & Safety: Is your decision for based on minimizing or mitigating harm and maximizing health,
well-being and safety? Explain how you accomplish this.
My decision is based on minimizing harm and maximizing health. Covid was only a recent example that I used but another viruses that many people get is the flu. It is so easy to catch without the vaccination and there is data from the past years to show how detrimental it used to be to out society when there wasn’t a vaccine. Health Justice & Equality: Are you using skills, experience, and knowledge to make sure that benefits and burdens are distributed equally among all people (i.e. both your target population and everyone as a whole)? Explain how you accomplish/show this.
Yes, vaccinations are meant for everyone. No matter the differences we may all have we still have to be around each other and just like the Coronavirus, it does not pick it’s host. Interdependence & Solidarity: What conflicts can
you see arising from your decision regarding groups of people, institutions, resources, or the environment? I can see people refusing to get certain vaccinations and feeling they’re not safe or in their best interest. Also, being that the target population won’t be able to attend public school would cause conflict. Human Rights & Civil Liberties: When you make your decision, what kind of infringement on rights/autonomy can be expected? How can you justify this?
Individuals don’t have a basic right to refuse vaccination since one person's decision impacts the health of other persons and the general public. Even while it is still legal to refuse to get a particular vaccination, doing so may result in being denied access to specific locations since it poses a health risk.
Inclusivity & Engagement: What groups of people do you think you should engage
with to gather insight before
making this decision (i.e., I think I should engage with parents because although the target population is children they need consent from their guardians and law makers. It’s important to get feedback from these individuals because they are apart of the public and they make decisions for the younger generation.

people affected by the decision, law makers, etc.)? List at least 2.
Why is it important to get the feedback from these individuals? Think About an Alternative Choice
What would an alternative decision be for your ethical dilemma? Mask mandates Is the alternative choice more or less harmful/intrusive than the choice you made?
Explain why.
The choice is less intrusive because you can buy the mask from many different
stores. Also, they are simple to use and cheap to get. If you made this alternative choice, would the group of people most vulnerable to the effects change or stay the same?
Explain why.
The group would stay the same. They would stay the same because they would still be the most at risk and the masks are only in place for someone without necessary vaccines.
