Religious Groups: Lutheranism Islam Controversial Topics: Do-Not-Resuscitate Body Modification in Gender Transition Surgery Organ Donations Reviewing my profession as a Healthcare Manager, my goal is to ensure Healthcare Quality. We want to work with the public to help them understand that we want the best healthcare to be received for every individual, regardless of their decisions. With such controversial topics such as DNR, Gender Transition Surgery and Organ Donors, we still strive to make sure everyone is safe. DNR is a choice by the patient, we respect that decision and follow their wish. Gender Transition Surgery once again is a choice, we want and plan to make sure that the individual is healthy and safe before, during and after surgery. With Organ Donations we make sure that each organ is safely secured, transported, and kept sterile for when the time comes when a transplant is needed. There is no picking what you like and dislike in this position, the goal is to help the patient survive or in a DNR case be comfortable. The Debate: Islam Lutheranism Do Not Resuscitate Islam allows a DNR if the situation is to stop a medical futility. The matter is permitted against if it is solely to relieve the patient of pain. From what I can gather Lutherans believe in the DNR order as it is the wishes the person themselves. Body Modification in Gender Transition Surgery Islam only recognizes man and woman, no other gender and considers it a false mentality. As well as not accepting any marriages that is not between a man and a woman. Lutherans confess that God made and all creatures and are bodies do not belong to us. It also looks at it a sense of lying to thy neighbor, that you are not what God intended you to be. So, this is not well accepted in Lutheranism. Organ Donations Islam believes in the principle of saving human lives. Most Muslim scholars who belong to schools of Islamic law have invoked that the priority of saving a human life and have The Lutheran Church encourages organ donation and considers it a way to contribute to the well-being of humanity and shows its expression of the love for a neighbor in need.
agreed that organ transplant is necessary to have a noble ending and considered a noble deed. Myself in the role of a Medical Professional: Do Not Resuscitate Being in a situation as a Medical Manager and having to discuss with an Islam patient about a DNR order, I would first discuss with the family on how they are feeling about the situation. But then I would focus on how the patient is. Then, depending on the situation, try and help the family understand how sick the patient might be. With a situation like this you want to try and save someone first, but you also want to respect someone is wishes. So, I would follow what the family would want and is legally decided on. I would discuss with the individual first if possible and go over the decision they want. I would recommend they talk with their family and if they needed me to be there as a medium, I would try and help ease the pain. This is a tough decision for anyone to make and sometimes doing it alone is worse. Body Modification in Gender Transition Surgery Despite one’s religious beliefs, if a person comes into my facility with the intention and goal to have surgery done for gender transition, we will go ahead with that surgery. I might consider discussing one’s faith with them and understanding the possible issues that could arise but in 2023 it is hard to allow yourself to stop one being who they want to be. Like Islam, it is hard to tell one know if it is something they want to have done. I would consider explaining to them to investigate your religious beliefs and family before making this decision but if the patient wants to have the surgery done, they can have it done. Organ Donations Discussing with the patient if possible or the family on if they need to have any certain religious services be met or have happened for the organ to be donated. Seeing if there is something as medical team, we can do to allow the patient to donate in the name of Allah. Since the church encourages this topic, we would kindly open the conversation with the family and discuss which organs they would feel comfortable with. This obviously depends on whether the patient is not able to do so themselves. Also telling them the importance of how
the donation can potentially save another human. DNR is a tough subject across all opinions and religions. Both Islam and Lutheran accept the DNR, but Islam has a compelling case in the reasoning for the DNR. A lot of the time it is meant to help the patient end their pain. That is not a strong enough reasoning for Islam, as they only accept this matter if it is because of medical futility and no other options are doable. Lutheranism accepts it if it is the patient’s wishes. Gender Transition is an interesting conversation when it comes to faith groups. Because you are not on the hunt as a doctor outwardly finding people and having them do this surgery. This is an individual who wants to come in and have this surgery done, this is a decision they made. This person knows their religion and understands the impact it can or cannot have on their family and beliefs. So, you accept the role as someone who stands by the side of the patient and the decision the patient has made. Organ Donations seems to be one that is something that is agreed upon in both religions, while Islam does want you to donate in the name of Allah, there is still an ok with it being done and the idea of being able to save another human is important from both sides of the spectrum.
