“Million Dollar Baby”
1. a) Please list and define the four ethical theories discussed throughout this
semester, and provide an example of each, as you did in Assignment #4. b)
Please describe
both
the moral correctness
and incorrectness
of Euthanasia,
using the Utilitarian and Deontology theories, at a minimum. Feel free to
discuss all four theories.
The four categories of ethical theories are virture, rights, deonotolgy and
utilitarianism. Utilitaianism focuses on actions that foster happiness and
diregard harm. When applied toward making decisions it is aimed at the
betterment of the people and emphasizes moral charater.
Euthanaisa under untilitarianism involves the person’s choice to live or
die the way they decide too in the event of impending death and/or
prolonged suffering. In denotology, it would be encouraged if it was thought
to bring more good than harm.
2. Did Maggie (Hillary Swank) die as a result of Euthanasia? Please explain
what “euthanasia” is. as defined in the article,
Rule Utilitarianism and
Euthanasia,
and why you believe she did (or did not) die by Euthanasia.
Yes because she asked to end her suffering.
3. Did Frankie (Clint Eastwood) kill her or let her die, as discussed in the
article,
Justifying Physician-Assisted Deaths
? How does the example about
Mr. Mafia, in the article (pp. 86-87), apply to Frankie (Clint Eastwood)?
Frankie let her die. She asked him to after hearing the story of Frankie’s dad
and his dog. She had enjoyed her glory and did not want to suffer. He did not
simply kill her, he accepted her request.
4. How does the story about Dr. Kevorkian and his patient, Adkins, in the
article
Justifying Physician-Assisted Deaths,
apply to the Maggie (Hillary
Swank) and Frankie (Clint Eastwood)?
The story of Dr.Kevorkian and his patient insists on ensuring that the client
understands their right to choose euthanasia . It connects to Maggie because
they both intended for a mercy killing.
5. Please describe the moral correctness or incorrectness of Frankie (Clint
Eastwood), as evaluated using the Virtue Ethics and Feminism theories that
we have discussed this semester.
His actions may be considered wrong because society in general believes
that only God can hive and take life. The feminism theory insists on insurring
that women are kept alive but does not focus on the quality of life.
6. How does the family of Maggie (Hillary Swank) represent one of the
primary concerns with Euthanasia, as discussed in the class readings?
He family does not like the action which is a representation of how most of
society views natural death.
7. Please define the concept of Autonomy. Also, please provide specific
examples of how this concept applies to Maggie (Hillary Swank) and any
other characters in the movie.
The concept of autonomy refers to and individual’s capacity to make
decisions in the right course of action for their lives regardless of their moral
content.Maggie’s death was intended based on earlier request and Frankie
used his autonomy to rlieve her of her pain without thinking if it would be
supported by other.
8. Please provide any other observations that you wish to share regarding
this movie; either concerns, favorite parts, or new understandings. There are
many different relationships and, thus, moral dilemmas throughout the
movie.
Personally would not be a movie I chose to watch on my own and it annoyed
me how many times Frankie said “I don’t train girls” in the first half of the
movie.
