Discussion Thread Reply: Political and International Contexts
The historical and contemporary perspectives on bribery emphasize its persistent
unethical nature, fostering inequality and eroding trust. Adding to the discourse, a new biblical
perspective aligns with these ethical concerns. In Micah 6:8, a prophetic call to justice states,
"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act
justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (New International Version, 2023).
This verse underscores the importance of just actions, devoid of bribery, as part of a righteous
life.
Moreover, considering the complex cultural dynamics influencing bribery, a new
viewpoint emerges. Cultural relativism, the idea that ethical standards are context-dependent,
introduces a nuanced lens (Ritzer, 2012). While certain practices might be deemed bribery in
one culture, they might be perceived as customary in another. “High context cultures, such as
Japan, Italy, Spain and Turkey, look at gift giving as a social imperative. Low context cultures,
such as USA, Germany and Switzerland, tend to consider gift giving as something optional”
(Dion, 2010, p. 246). However, this cultural relativism should not serve as a justification for
unethical behavior. Instead, it urges a thoughtful examination of cultural norms, encouraging
societies to distinguish between acceptable practices and those that perpetuate corruption.
“Businesses of all sizes and from many diverse industries around the world have
attempted to respond to the increasing pressure to create an ethical environment at work. As
discussed, the organization’s culture and ethical work climate play a central role in promoting
ethics at work and encouraging employees to act ethically. Businesses have implemented many
ethical safeguards to create effective ethics programs. Challenges remain as organizations

expand their operations globally and encounter a complex network of different customs and
regulations” (Lawrence, Weber, Hill, & Wasieleski, 2023, p. 135). In tackling the global bribery
issue, understanding diverse cultural perspectives alongside biblical principles can inform more
effective strategies for combating this pervasive problem.
