Running Head: Mercy Death 1 Mercy Death Ohilda Ortega Kaplan University Ohilda Ortega
Mercy Death 2 A patient that has lived for many years a healthy and happy live suddenly has been told that he has a terminal illness and there is no hope or cure. This patient asks the doctor to help him end his life and to give him a mercy death. This in principle could be seen different by different people. I would consider that this patient is acting a follower of individual ethical egoism theory which states that people must act in their own interest (Thiroux, J. P., & Krasemann, K. W, 2011). The problem with this is that the patient is not taking into consideration the consequences that this act will have on his families and people that care for him. The family of this patient would have to either agree with his decision or try to persuade the doctor not to do it. As the doctor goes, he could easily follow the mercy death approach and assist this patient to commit suicide or he could allow this patient to die a natural death without his interference. In any case, these approaches are both known as practicing euthanasia (Thiroux, J. P., & Krasemann, K. W, 2011). Personally, I believe that people should be allowed to receive medical attention as long as they are breathing. I believe in the ethical theory of act utilitarianism which states that people should perform the act which will bring the greatest amount of good over bad for everyone affected by the act (Thiroux, J. P., & Krasemann, K. W, 2011). If this patient were my father, brother or son I would want him to live for as long as God permits and I will take care of him until his last breath.
