At the beginning of this term what did you expect to learn from this course
At the beginning of this term, I had expected to learn more about the medical ethical
issues that arise in relation to nursing. I took a look at the book beforehand, and I understood that
I’ll be learning and possibly applying theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, and others. I
believe that I also had to apply these theories into my posts and papers.
What was something unexpected that you learned?
One unexpected aspect that I learned was about the ethics of abortion. I always knew it
was complex but it is much more than that. Since it involves IVF, as well as recognizing the
different perspectives such as pro choice and pro life. It also encouraged me to understand both
perspectives while also constructing my own opinion. Another unexpected thing that I learned
was that I align with the utilitarianism theory quite a lot, especially the consequentialism aspect.
I found myself consistently drawn to the idea of evaluating ethical decisions based on their
outcomes and the greatest overall good. Understanding the real-world applications of
utilitarianism in healthcare, such as resource allocation and healthcare policy, was eye-opening
and resonated with my personal ethical beliefs.
What do you feel was the most valuable thing you learned?
I think the most valuable thing I learned was that there were very different opinions of
my classmates that I encountered, despite us all trying to be nurses. We each all have a certain
idealistic moral opinion and perspective on many aspects in life, whether it is relative or not. I
believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and can act upon choosing so as well.
