Ethical Dilemma
When thinking about an ethical Dilemma within the student affairs department, I thought
about students who may not be dishonest or other issues that students may face. When I thought
about this topic it brought me to when I had finals for my undergraduate degree. How I needed to
make sure that I had my Adderall. During this time of finals, I had to focus and slow people like
me down to complete all necessary tasks. In order to receive this prescription, I had to go to a Dr.
with documentation of why I needed the medication. I had to turn in semester grades in order to
show proof that I was a current college student. While at the appointment I had to also,
completely different questionnaires to show the level of focus and nervousness in order to be
diagnosed with ADHD and ADD. I can remember that some students on campus would ask me
for my medication just to stay up and focus on the studying. The unethical part of that is, the
medication was prescribed to me and giving it to another individual would not be consider
ethical. If the University would find out about students taking prescribed medication give those
medication to other students, it will be unethical. This can be a conflict and ethical situation. So,
while doing research on this topic I came across a story on the inside higher education. The
article spoke about how students turned to using the drug and the university thought it was a bad
idea. “With college student’ illicit use of “study aids” like Ritalin and Adderall climbing toward
10 percent nationally, health officials are struggling to find effective ways to address the issue
(Inside Higher ED 2022). When it comes to my Ethical Dilemma, I think I could not say much
about this situation because I know the feeling. Now Santa Clara University went to the students
asking them if that is a good decision choosing to engage in such behavior. To the university if
they find out about students are turning to use Adderall or Ritalin, they may fill that student are
not being honest or even breaking the school policies. The university started a new project called
The Big Q. This program is housed in Santa Clara’s Makkula Center for Applied Ethics. With is
program the students engage in questions that talk about prescription drugs. Something that stuck
with me when doing research on this topic someone brought up the question saying if students
are using them to get ahead in classes, do we consider them cheating? Is this okay to turn to pills
for other intended purpose instead of what it is for. While if this came to me as a student affair
professional I would have to think and do a lot of research and look and read the policy regrading
it. From my experience I could say that I would not want to make any decision on it because I
know the position I was in and if I would have never had my med would have never been able to
finish my degree. Now if I the student is caught sale it on campus, I would have to follow the
policy and turn the students over to campus police. The hardest part about this job is making a
good ethical call when we know that the student is doing something that we did or thought of but
we must make sure that while making this decision it is in the best interest for the university and
the student.
